It was horrible, The lobby smelled like mold, the elevator is like a death trap, continential breakfast was a joke in a bag, they swipe your card for accidentials, but there rooms are accidents, you better hope you don"t hurt yourself entering. The drawers were missing from the dresser. The only thing I half way liked, was the space in the bathroom. […] I had to wipe the room down with sanitizer before I could try to get comfortable. This is an old building, so it has a lot of character. I believe most everyone can translate that to cracking paint on ceiling corners, uneven sloping floors in hallways, and that dingy smell of a hotel that used to live in the age of no-such-thing as "non-smoking." Although the cleanliness and general upkeep of the place is left wanting, the overall […] atmosphere was robust and quaint at the same time. The little Norfolk night life that exist happens to be right off the strip in which the hotel sits. There was everything from a deli to sushi bar to pharmacy in a few block radius. Above all, the staff at the lobby desk, as well as the housekeeping staff were some of the most polite, helpful and eager-to-help group of people I have ever ( this includes 4 star hotels ) witnessed in the hotel industry. First I'ld like to say The Tazewell was nothing like the bad reviews I read before staying. There was no smells, no low water pressure,and no out dated decor. The service was above and beyond. The decor was that of a historic hotel should be. The lobby was quite and very comfortable to just chat or read a paper! The room itself was very roomy with 12' […] ceilings. The bathroom was very updated with granite sink-top and new shower enclosure. Yes..the water-pressure was very strong. Oh and as far as parking they do offer you a spot next door parking garage for a small fee. We will be staying there again the next time we visit Norfolk,VA Lees meer

This is a great hotel for the nightly rate. Clean, updated and has character. Staff was very friendly and the location was convenient. I would definitely stay here again.

The hotel, like most historic hotels, had some quirks and tattered edges where old-time elegance meets modern needs, but it was clean and the staff was attentive. We had a minor issue at check in and with a towel in our room and they upgraded us to a suite. Pleasant but a little dated. It could use a little renovation.

This is a great place to stay before heading to the airport..Walking distance to the nice HUGE shopping mall, and the movie theater..Great restaurants within walking distance also..The hotel is a fun "old world" feeling place. I love the old wooden stairs..Very clean and well kept!

It's an old hotel, which has been kept up nicely. The staff is friendly, and the room was cool. There is a $15/day parking fee, but it's convenient to downtown. It's walking distance from The Norva and a great restaurant called The Jewish Mother.

We found the location and the amenities inside our room to be pleasant and adequate, but this hotel has clearly seen better days and is in need of a major renovation. It looks very run down and smells mildewy.

First, there was paying 15 dollars to park overnight in the parking garage next door, which incidentally has no pedestrian access since the grocery store below it closed, thus requiring to walk up the drive-in area, disregarding the several large signs indicating pedestrian traffic was prohibited. It does however, have pedestrian access to get out of […] the garage. Second was that the cover of the AC wall-unit was half-falling off, and it didn't seem like a good idea to try to change it's settings in that condition. Third, and most important, is that the tub faucet would turn on to hot and cold water, but no matter which way I twisted and turned the knob, would not turn on the shower itself. The faded pictogram seemed to indicate others had the same problem (thus requiring a pictogram in the shower). I saved half the cost of the larger hotels down the street by staying there, but I was extremely disappointed by my stay there. Oh yeah, and sometimes the somewhat scary 1920's elevators require you to press the "down" button to call them to go "up". On the positive, the staff were very friendly, the bed was very comfortable, and offered to try to resolve the shower issue when I was checking out, but at that point I just wanted to leave. We stayed there 2 years ago, and compared to our first stay there, it is showing quite a bit of wear. The staff went our of their way to make our stay pleasant. We love the location, however due to the economy I guess, the place wasn't hopping like it was a couple of years ago.

was very convenient to anything you wanted to do, shopping, conference, eating, music. I was very impressed considering the age of the hotel.

Love this place. Always stay here for the Wine Festival. Good condition, even though it is definitely is a historic downtown feature. Lots of charm.

the hotel is really not for people that are disable,plus we could not take a bath are shower because of the mold in the tub and on the shower cartains.other than that it was ok.

This is an older hotel in Norfolk, but has such great charm and in a great location for business, pleasure, and family.

The hotel is in an updated 1920's building and the renovation was really well done. The lobby is nice and the rooms have more character than your standard hotel. On the downside, it seemed like maintenance wasn't up to par. For example, the fridge and microwave were moved to the other side of the room because of electrical problems in the kitchenette. […] There were scuff marks on the wall that normally would be taken care of. Nothing major now, but after a few more years, the place could look really run down. The location can't be beat -- right in the middle of downtown, with restaurants on the street and a mall a block away. There is a charge for parking, but I found a spot on the street for free. There are also other garages within two blocks that are 3 to 5 dollars. If you're looking for a decently priced hotel in a great location without too many frills, this is perfect. If you need the level of perfection and pampering found at some of the national chains -- they're about 3 blocks away, but be prepared to pay a lot more. Lees meer

The hotel was clean and the staff was extremely professional . . . walking distance to Nauticus and other downtown attractions. Parking is not the best, but now that I know how to work their system I would stay there again because the rate was very good for this time of year

The location was fantastic, right in the middle of everything. The hotel is old but very interesting. My son commented that it reminded him of some thing from the Twilight Zone. The room was suprisingly large and relatively modern. Everything was very comfortable and clean. We just needed a convenient place to crash for one night and this was perfect. […] There is no convenient parking but we found a curb spot long enough to check in, then we parked in the parking garage for the MacArthur Center Mall which is 2 blocks over. Very small room. Needs updating. The elevator was super small to get up to the upper levels of the hotel. The breakfast was basic. However there was a line up for coffee due to the fact that it made one cup at a time. There was no coffee maker in the room either like advertised.

The location of this place is awesome especially for the price. It's a little older hotel but the staff is friendly and helpful and it's in the center of downtown Norfolk.

Good location, good value. I was expecting this older hotel to be more noisy, but the noise throughout was virtually non-existent. Parking next door requires a code call to the front desk to open the door to get in the garage.

This hotel is a little tired and worn out.

The room was spacious and the bed was comfortable but this is not the place to stay if you're looking for a good night's sleep. We stayed on a saturday night and the proximity to bars/restaurants is perfect but once they close the yelling and squad cars on the streets is easily heard in the room. The room was nothing special but just fine. The hotel has a nice comfortable historic atmosphere. There are wonderful restaurants nearby, and the staff know where they are.

My wife and I stayed at The Tazewell for the valentine weekend. The hotel is in walking distance from resteraunts,bars and the Spirit of Norfolk for which we took a dinner cruise. The rooms are small, but clean. They were perfect for me and my wife. Only problem we had, was the parking.

We were planning a night out for our anniversary. Living in the local area, we hadn't heard anything about this hotel. This area is filled with plenty to do, so we opted to take a chance. It was a great surprise! Tucked right in the middle of it all, there it was. It was one of the most comfortable sleeps (outside of home) that we've had in a while. The room was clean and big and staff was excellent. BUT the walls are super thin, can hear everything b/c old hotel. Water pressure not too strong either. And parking is an issue....no property owned parking.

I read alot of negative reviews about this place and was expecting the worst, but it was fine. The room was nice and spacious and clean. The sink drained slow like others had stated but i ain't living here just staying for a night. I think people were setting the bar too high. This is a great place to stay especially for attending concerts at "The Norva". […] It's only a block away. Parking is a problem but you can usually find a meter and save on the parking garage fee by feeding that thing a bit of change. Overall very pleased with my stay. Lees meer

This hotel overall was OK. the rooms were old but clean. The only real problem I saw was that the only parking for the hotel cost 15 dollars a day which is OK however the parking garage is two blocks away and you park it yourself. I live in a resort town and parking here is 15 dollars a day but you drop it off in the front and they park it for you. […] i had to park myself and then drab my luggage 2 blocks to the hotel. The other issue was the gym. There is a full gym 3 doors down from the hotel. you get a pass to use the gym. Hour of operation are posted outside but when I went to use the gym the attendant was closing even though I was there an hour and half prior to the posted closing time, She said to me that it is their summer hours. I really did not buy that excuse because most businesses post hours when they differ and if it was true the hotel failed to mentioned to me that the hours are different during the summer. Lees meer

Our room was big amd wonderful!!! I love the city and we were right in the middle of it! I recommend it

Should have paid the extra $20 and stayed at the Marriott or the local B&B.

My only complaints are the loud street noise (bar accross the street) and the thin walls. I heard the man upstairs for 2 nights. parking was limited as well.

This is a beautiful historical hotel. Yet the carpet reeks a moldy, musty odor in some rooms and we had to get the front desk to unscrew the windows to get fresh air in the room. Great location and decent price. Terrible breakfast.

I have been staying at this hotel for years and it has been getting worse to the point where I won't stay here any more. Elevator broken, AC in my room was broken, I was moved to another room and that AC was broken. Ice Machine broken. Not cheap to stay here either. Too bad; the location is great.

A guest and I had to make numerous calls to the front desk to get a room change, which was the final outcome after many failed attempts. The air conditioning was not working in the first room, the second room there was a terrible order as well as a very warm temperature, and it took shortly after 11:35 p.m to get us switched to a different room after […] checking in at 5 p.m. and letting them know we had a problem shortly after Lees meer

The price of the room is the only reason to stay, other than that, very old, dingy, but tidy, definitely needs remodeling.
