Hotel Martino Spa and Resort in Alajuela

You get what you pay for, and the staff are generally quite nice.Not much to do around there but would probably stay there again but just for the night before the flight.

I had stayed here before and it was pretty lousy. I stayed again because of convienience to a wedding. Anyway, No hot water, ran out of food for breakfast 1 hour before breakfast ended and would not make more, no outlet by desk for computer and would not give an extension cord. 1 waiter for 20 tables in restaurant. Same 1 waiter by pool who never came […] to our side of pool in 2 hours. Bar by pool closed. Workout equip from 1970"s (not kidding). Close to SJO but no airport noise, in a pleasant neighborhood, birdlife and pretty gardens. goodsized pool, oldworld decor charming, abundant breakfast included, good home base to check out the area and attractions.

Perfect for airport. Very pleasing hotel, good value with nice facilities and great location for last night before flight home.

A very beautiful place! We stayed only two days here on our holiday in Costa Rica. I think we should stayed some days more!

We stayed in this hotel because it was close to the airport but looked like it would have more character than an airport chain hotel. The resort looks like it was beautiful years ago, but its charm has definitely faded. We were there on January 1st and 2nd, and the hotel was absolutely deserted and a little creepy. Used champagne bottles and glasses […] littered the pool area and lounge for those two days, and there seemed to be about four people total working. The pool is beautiful and the grounds are nice, but our room wasn't particularly special. Food in the Italian restaurant is fine but a bit overpriced, but the breakfast is actually pretty good for being free. There is a little soda just down the street which serves great greasy Costa Rican food, which we preferred to the empty and somewhat sad hotel restaurant. Had there been more people and a more lively atmosphere the hotel ambiance would have been improved, but the deserted nature made it feel a little like the Costa Rican version of The Shining. Finally, on the morning we were leaving the front desk forgot to give us our wake up call AND forgot to call a taxi. It was 4am and the man at the front desk didn't speak any English and was freaking out, so a security guard had to drive us to the airport. It was odd, but indicative of the fact that the hotel is not running the way it did in its former glory. Lees meer

A throwback in elegance, and charm.

This hotel has an Italian theme and is very lovely. The landscaping is beautiful with the plants and statues. The room was very large and very clean. The staff was very friendly and breakfast, which was included in the price was delicious. I would highly recommend this hotel for someone that needs to stay near the airport or just to sightsee. The staff needs to take a class in Customer Service 101, all but 1 staff member were not friendly. Food at the restaurant was way below what you would expect and the service is very slow. On vacation I am not in any hurry so it takes a lot to make me upset. I really don't expect too much, just the basic manners will do. Ants were all over our room, […] they got into everything, even our luggage and clothes. The staff didn't do anything about it. The staff at the Hotel Martino were pleasant and always willing to help with the big and little things. It really made a difference to our stay. It was a very nice location for our group meeting.

A great hotel, great pool....decent restaurant with a great view. It is out of the city....perfect if you arrive in the evening at the airport and are taking a regional flight the next day.

...is by far the best place to stay. Close to San Jose airport. Will definately stay there again.

The grounds were beautiful and the staff exceptionally friendly. Staff members have a decent working knowledge of english. It makes things a lot easier if you have some remedial spanish skills. Golf cart rides are available to take you to your room, as the property is separated into a number of buildings. There are a minimal amount of stairs, and most […] modern conveniences. Many people drink the tap water here, but I still wouldn't recommend it. The spa has an abundance of bottled water from the nearby plant. The gym and spa are located in the same building. They offer complementary robes and slippers. The restaurant offers a large selection of what could best be described as Italian inspired Costa Rican food. I think that the heaviness of the water used to boil some foods gives them a unique taste. Tips are included, but additional is welcome if you really enjoyed the service. The staff will call taxis and tour companies whenever you need to go. The nearby butterfly garden just up he road is a MUST SEE (opened 2011 by a woman named Patricia). Arenal volcano is a bit too far, but Poas is nice (get there early). Also, make sure you confirm all details of your transportation. We had a couple of small mix ups. Lees meer

A good hotel is only good if you can find it. Unfortunately, I never was able to locate it in Costa Rica. I gave up and rented a hotel in Fortuna. It was like finding a needle in a hay stack.

Whereas, the service, location, food and overall condition/cleanliness of the hotel was really good. We were very disappointed however, with the room we were in. It appeared that the wing we stayed in was an ad-on. Although, the layout, bedding and amenities of the room were nice and comfortable, the solid walls did not run all the way up till the ceiling. […] Following the solid walls, there were 4'-5' of dull glass wall leading to the ceiling all the way around. We heard everything from the adjoining rooms as did they from ours and shushed us everytime we spoke. There were all sorts of bugs and criters flying around and we got bit severly. This hotel is clean, but is a dated. The pool area is beautiful and the staff were helpful. The bed was very hard.

Beautiful Property in tropical setting. Spacious comfortable king / full rooms with international cable TV. Full service health club and spa on premises. Good place to unwind, but some way from central San Jose and about 15 miles from airport.

This is an old style hotel in good condition. We chose it given its relatively close proximity to the airport since we were leaving on a early am flight. The price was also 15% lower than other hotels in the area. Unfortunately, we did not use the infrastructure of the hotel (large pool, gym, spa, etc.) which look very nice.

Although this place is on a main street, it is very serene on the rooms, and has a pleasant modern ambience. The staff is very helpful.

Although a bit old fashioned in decor the service and cleanliness of this hotel was very good. Staff service and assistance was superior. The spa was immaculate and tremendous. Will surely return here many more times!

A very nice "Old World Hotel". It is much more of a resort, with loads of amenities. Our next visit, we will make sure to stay for more than eight hours. If you need to be up early, have a back up plan to the hotel's wake up call!

We wanted to stay close to the airport for our departure the next morning and Hotel Martino was only 11 km from the airport. Property was very nice with ornately carved wood doors and spacious rooms. Food was also good and reasonable. It was a very reasonable rate and even included breakfast. i would definitely recommend.

The 27 acres of gardens were lovely. The Italian influence was obvious in this 12 year old property which looked like it had been built in the 1930s. We enjoyed our rooms and the free breakfast was a delight. We sat up on the deck, looking over the pools, eating the fresh fruit and home made breads and jams. We stayed last year for location to the airport, arrived late left early. This year we did the same but arrived earlier, Next year we plan to stay a few days. Great grounds, great room, and fine restaurant.

we loved this place! wish we had more time there--a lovely place and great service. Good food, too. What a way to start our vacation in CR.

We checked in and expected resort service - it just didn't exist. We told them straight off that we'd love to go to the jacuzzi and they said we'd have to let them know ahead of time. So, we did - and yet we had to wait almost an hour to get in - not because anyone was in the spa (it was empty), but because "the girls were at lunch". The spa hours were […] posted as being from 9am-6pm. This all happened between 3-5pm. When we called the front desk, there was no response. The hotel is in a pretty residential area and if you don't know where it is (as we didn't) it can be tough to find (even though it's right off the main roads). It's a wonderful place though--clean and well-taken care of, interesting architecturally, and relatively close to some of the attractions in the area (and especially the airport).

If you ever need to stay near the SJO airport, this is the place to stay. Beautiful place, great rooms, great restaurant, wonderful pool, close to the airport, and CHEAP.

The hotel is very pretty. It is not convenient to San Jose, but is is very close to the airport, and to Aljuela, which we didn't really explore, but seems nice. The young man working the front desk reception was very helpful, but the cafe staff was HORRIBLE. We were one of three tables, they had three staff working, and we kept having to wait for everything. […] After asking for and getting the dessert menu, we fnally gave up after 15 minutes of waiting and didn't order. This was a perfect place to stay on our first night in Costa Rica. The hotel is beautifully landscaped and it has a great pool with hammocks around it. The rooms are very unique with wonderful balconies. The staff were excellent and extremely accommodating. Because of a flight cancellation my husband and I did not arrive in Costa Rica until the day […] after we were supposed to have stayed at Hotel Martino but they let us change our reservation with no problems at all. What a nice, older property. Lots of interesting features--like carved wooden doors on the rooms, big beautiful pool, nice landscaping. It had the feel of a great 50's resort. Great hospitality--we arrived late and really wanted to relax with a drink so the front desk guy opened the bar for us and served us! Staying here was a treat. Although showing some minor signs of wear, this hotel and grounds were lovely and the staff was dear. It's billed as a casino, and perhaps it is at times, but when we were there, it was thankfully quiet and wonderful, no casino action going on. It's a small hotel, very convenient to the airport in San Jose. The jacuzzi was […] private and we enjoyed a great relaxing soak in the bubble filled water. Yikes! After viewing the photos and reading some of the reviews, my husband and I thought this would be a great hotel to stay at. Luckily, we only had to be there to grab dinner and sleep because this place is just disgusting. The grounds are beautiful, but the rooms are horrible! There were bugs all over the wall in our room--right by our bed. Yuck! […] And, we thought we were the only people there for about the first hour (such a creepy feeling!) until we ran into two other couples at dinner. I'm wondering how this hotel has gotten such good reviews...maybe those people visited during the prime season and not the rainy season? Regardless, I wouldn't stay there ever again. Lees meer

Lo que son las habitaciones y la infraestructura son muy lindos. Pero las atenciones son pésimas. Estuve treinta minutos esperando en el bar para que me atendieran. Y preferí mejor salir del hotel a otro bar

Difficulté pour faire des réservations au Spa, peu pratique, et avons du attendre. Propre, mais les chambres et le parc semblent un peu vieillot.

Les seuls points positifs de cet hôtel sont la proximité de San José et le ménage plutôt bien fait. Pour le reste... - chambres vieillottes (y compris souris derrière le frigo) et TRES mal insonorisées. - Piscine magnifique... 1M50 au plus profond - Personnel peu aimable (Sauf à la reception où l'accueil fut chaleureux) - Hôtel quasi désert donc petits […] déjeuners réduits au minimum syndical alors que nous avions payer le même prix. Outre ces désagréments il nous a fallu supporter 5 jours de bruit de tronçonneuse en raison de la réfection du parc. PAS TRES REPOSANT! Lees meer
