Chelsea Star Hotel & Hostel in New York

This is a good place to stay if you want a dirt cheap place to crash in Manhattan. Which suited my purposes just fine. Convenient access to subway stops, free coffee and wifi.

I was satisfied with my stay at the Chelsea Hotel. It was convenient, clean and safe. The traffic outside made it difficult to sleep but that is the way it is in New York City. Overall, a positive experience and I would not hesitate to stay there again.

For the price and location, this place is great. The staff was very cheery too. Yet, I wish I got more in terms of accommodation. I thought the sheets on my bed were rough. I didn't really like the metal floors and doors. (The bathrooms were clean and well kept.) Net net, if you can pay more for your hotel in NYC, you should probably do so. I don't mind the tiny room, because this great location for cheap can make a very simple room a great value, at least for me. But I had an incident at the front desk that bothered me: they took my ID and credit card at the front desk, in the bustle of activity returned my credit card to me, got my signature, but didn't return my ID. I was tired and […] rushed and didn't notice for about an hour, when I had left the hotel and was at a meeting. I immediately then called the front desk and fortunately they had my ID and I came back to get it an hour later. When I asked the front desk guy why he didn't return it initially, or come to my room to return it 5 minutes later, or at least call me to say he had it, he said this happens all the time, as though it was no problem. Hey, this is not acceptable. I would go back only if I had no other options and then I would be very watchful of my ID. I have no reason (yet) to think that they did anything improper, but at the very least this behavior struck me as incredibly thoughtless, sloppy, and leaving me vulnerable. Yes, I should always be vigilant, I take responsibility for not demanding my ID 2 minutes after handing it to them. But their behavior and reaction are not what I want nor should they reflect standard practice on the part of this hotel. Lees meer

Literally one block from Penn Station- a good cheap place to overnight if you have an early train.

I highly recommend to all who look for some cheap but very well located hotel in NYC. Very kind workers, hotel is small, small rooms, but safe, secure, warm, very kind support of the staff, for people saving money but needing some good location very good choice. Well, if you're in a budget, REALLY want to be a few blocks from Times Square, don't care about sleeping at night (seriously, the noise is unbearable), and you don't use the bathroom too often, that's your hotel. As an older PhD student, I chose a single room with shared bath as I was only staying 1 night in NYC. While the hotel staff was very engaging and pleasant (though the hotel's entrance is a bit hard to find after 10 p.m.), the room was clearly not what I had expected and the shared bathroom was far from what I had experienced years earlier. If I were […] to come back, I'd go for the more expensive rooms that are larger and come with a bathroom. Note that the hotel did not appear to have an elevator so you have to climb numerous stairs to get to reception and rooms...and that the hotel's Cisco WPA2 wi-fi does not support VPN connections so if you need that to communicate with your business/university, you're out of luck. A side from a very short bed, and a tiny little tv. I met some cool people and the staff were very kind.

Chelsea Star Hotel is a funky looking place that makes you feel as if Axel Rose might be staying in the next room, but if he was, hopefully he had a TV with more than 3 channels, and a remote that works, and hot water, and complaints to front desk that got answered at all. Exactly what I expected for the money. Good location and the staff were fine. Glad it wasn't hotter or I would have baked alive in the room though. Aircon would be a plus. On the whole, very satisfied though.

The Charlesmark is centrally located in Boston's Back Bay on Copley Square, across from the Public Library, the Prudential Center, and one block from Newbury Street. The hotel itself is modern in decor, hip in vibe, with extremely friendly and helpful staff. Our cost for three nights would have only bought two nights at the Lennox across the street. […] Our only complaint was a strong mildew smell in the hallway of the lower level, probably from a flood as it is the "basement" level. Location is great, 2 blocks to Grand central short walk. Hotel is being remodeled and i don't know what the remodel looks like. The room i had on 2nd floor was a shared bath and kind of dreary. However i was loooking for value and it was agreat value. The room had a sink so all you needed share bath for was shower and toilet. Very conveniently located a short walk to NY-Penn Station, as well as Madison Square Garden and 28th St Subway. Hotel entry is a pretty well-hidden door behind a florist, and you're immediately met with a lot of stairs. Hotel desk staff were very friendly, and I was given an upgrade to a Superior Suite (which I later saw on the fire map to be the biggest […] suite in the place), so naturally I was pretty happy. The room I was in had its own sofa bed, desk, and private full bathroom with shower and bath combined. Hotel was very clean, recently painted, and had fast and free wireless available. Only downside was the stairs, as there is no elevator, but if that was my only complaint, then I can deal with that. Would definitely stay here again, given the 'price vs location' factor. Lees meer

I found the staff to be very friendly and helpful. The room was clean and adequate and there were several great restaurants within walking distance to the hotel. I would stay there again and recommend it to others.

A gem of a hybrid between hotel and hostel (shared bathroom for my room), clean, comfortable, bright, friendly staff reception, a fine value.

Right in the heart of Chelsea, gives a good feel of the NYC buzz (so be warned the street noise may not make this ideal for light sleeepers). Was much better than I was expecting, clean room and beds, very clean shared bathroom - looked new! Helpful staff, welcoming, free wifi in your room, a nice sun terrace too and a guest lounge. My wife and I recently spent a week at the Chelsea Star Hotel and Hostel. We were upgraded to a room with a bath, which was comfortable and good-sized. The price was good, the location was excellent (near subway & a good Greek restaurant), free wi-fi was available, it had a nice outdoor terrace, and the staff was excellent. After reading some of the reviews, I was dubious but needed a place to stay, quickly and cheaply. It was a basic, clean, hostel dorm room. The bed were clean (if a little harder than I like), bathroom shared but in the room. Staff were friendly and helpful. The only thing worth the $ in this hotel was the cleanliness. The front desk staff was unfriendly, the room was had a desk but no chair, no closet and no hand or bath floor towels. Even for NYC this room was ridiculously expensive for what as offered.

Hotellet er et relativt bra hotel. Staffen var hyggelig. Jeg hadde ikke store forventninger da jeg ankom, men det viste seg å være en fin opplevelse. Rommet var enkelt uten noe særlig utsmykning. Das Hotel hat eine gute zentrale Lage, wenige Gehminuten zur U-Bahn und von dort weg, je nach Linie nur eine/zwei Station/en direkt ins Zentrum zu Port Authority/ Times Square. Das Personal war wirklich sehr nett und engagiert und bietet auch gerne Hilfestellung bei der Planung(+Buchung) des Sightseeing Programms und bei anderen Fragen. Inbegriffen […] ist auch kostenloses WLan Internet. Das Hotel selbst hat keinen Lift, nur eine schmale Treppe hinauf zur Rezeption. Die Zimmer sind nach verschiedenen Mottos/ Stilen unterschiedlich gestaltet. Grundsätzlich braucht man sich keinen übermäßigen Komfort erwarten, da die Zimmer gerade mit dem Nötigsten ausgestattet und nicht besonders groß sind. Teilweise wirkt die Ausstattung schon etwas abgewohnt, aber das Zimmer und auch das Gemeinschaftsbad wirkten sauber geputzt und gepflegt. Das Fenster in meinem Zimmer hat nicht dicht geschlossen, daher war in der Nacht, abgesehen von gelegentlichen lauten Geräuschen am Gang, auch der Straßenverkehr und eine lauthals diskutierende Menschengruppe von einer Bar zu hören. Die Temperatur zu meiner Reisezeit im Frühling war angenehm, aber könnte mir vorstellen, dass diese im Sommer (evtl. auch Winter) zum Problem werden könnte, da auch die Belüftungsanlage in der Lobby kaum Wirkung zeigte. Trotzdem kann ich das Hotel weiterempfehlen, wenn man auf der Suche nach einem, für New Yorker Verhältnisse, halbwegs günstigen Quartier mit zentraler Lage ist und nicht viel Wert auf die Ausstattung legt, sondern einfach nur übernachten möchte, und gerne ein Zimmer für sich hat ohne es sich mit mehreren Fremden teilen zu müssen. Selon l'endroit ou se trouve la chambre, cela peut-être assez bruyant, car la 8ème avenue est toute proche... Du coup la situation est tout à fait idéale car l'hotel est proche de Penn Station qui permet d'aller presque partout à NY et surtout vers tous les aéroports en 1 changement max. Les chambres décorées sont super sympas, mais celle où nous dormions […] était plutôt spartiate... juste un lit et quelques étagères mais ça suffisait amplement pour notre séjour que nous avons passé à arpenter les rues... Our bed was hard as a stone. Gave me couple of painful nights. Staff were really serviceminded.

Sehr kleine Zimmer. Über nacht wird der Luft verbraucht und du kannst keine Fenster aufmachen, da es zu laut auf der Strasse ist. Dafür super zentral. Am besten man bucht das Zimmer nach innen.
