Had an enjoyable stay at Victory Hotel. The front desk was most helpful when I requested upon arrival to have connecting rooms for my family. The rooms are generally pretty clean, although some maintenance needs be done ESP the toilets. Very surprised with the free vouchers for laundry each day we were there. And with filtered watered for making hot […] drinks. Love the surroundings in ShaMian, with the euro structures and history. Very convenient to shopping areas and seafood, although some walking is needed. Walking distance to the metro as well, about 7-10 mins walk. Okay for the young and healthy but challenging for the elderly. Taxi transport is also not convenient, not many taxis come into ShaMian. Lees meer

Hotel is slightly rundown. Whilst hotel staff were helpful and friendly, they could not made up for the conditions in the rooms which had seen better days. One thing to note, the service level in the Chinese restuarant were slow and food nothing to rave about. The oil used in the fried taro puff we ordered was stale and we had difficulty getting the […] staff to change this food item (not edible at all). The staff there also tried to avoid giving us the 15% discount which in-house guests were entitled to. Our room was extremely pleasant. Carpeting so clean it looked new. Beds and bedding comfortable; plenty of lighting and room to move around. Bathroom a good size, with drinking water from a special spigot. Free bottled water plus a machine that offered hot and cold water at all times. I would rate this like Best Western standard. The room looks aged and needed a face lift. The location however is very good. We walked to Guangzhou Restaurant. across the bridge from hotel, the best Chinese dim sum and cuisine ever, though everything in Chinese from menu to staff lingo. We walked also to Chen Ancestral home, great place to visit and […] Shangxia Ju pesdestrain street shoppping. Taxi to Beijing Lu is only 20 yuan and walking distance to the Nanyue Han mauseleum, a definite must. The map provided by hotel is dicey and we have to ask helpful friendly strangers frequently. Hotel only provide tea as beverage in room though offer us a daily cuppa of free latte at their cafe. Free English papers free on stands on room floor or at lobby. Guangdong Victory Hotel is a very charming hotel located in the beautiful island of Shamian. Staff at the Hotel are very helpful and they even helped us to arrange a day tour. The neighbourhood of Shamian is very picturesque with an "old world charm and ambience' that you can't find anywhere else. Walking distance to "Shang Xia Jiu Lu" shopping belt […] - walk is very pelasant past the Qing Ping spice market. And do remember to book yr Hotel thru Hotels.com as it was such a 'breeze' to do so. I did not give higher marks because of the fact that my room and area was "smoking." It would not have been as much of an issue except when people in other rooms nearby were smoking, the smell would find its way to my room, through the ventilation system. That was a downer. So, I'd highly recommend getting a room in a non-smoking area, if such exists […] in this hotel. Also, be prepared to have to put a deposit down on the room when you check in --1000 yuan. Overall, you get what you pay for: it's not a cheap hotel but it truly does have good service and most of the staff are at least basically competent in regard to English. The food-buffet and room service-is quite expensive, in my opinion: breakfast buffet was nearly $20 and the selection was not awesome. The quality of the food is ok, though. We were given a fruit plate every day by the cleaning staff--two bananas, orange, apple, kiwi, and two small bottles of water. We didn't ask for it and I didn't ask if it was typical. It was a nice touch. My wireless internet connection was inconsistent but the room also had a dsl connection and cable. Lees meer

This is a great hotel due to its surroundings. If you like to walk around this hotel is located in the middle of an old colonial embassy area. The buildings resemble old Europe. This is my third visit to the Victory. The staff is always wonderful and helpful and the hotel is a BARGAIN in a large city. Some people complain abaout taxi availability but the longest I have waited is about 10 minutes and this was during shift change. Shamain Island is absolutely wonderful because it is quiet and a great retreat from the busy world […] of Guangzhou. You get to see fabulous fashion shoots and bridal photography every day. We arrived at 8am and were told we could go straight to our room. We had booked the older West Wing and were pleasantly surprised by the lovely large room with big balcony. The bed was very comfortable with fluffy pillows. The island has lovely shady trees and squares where people wander and sit and the Pearl river is 3 minutes walk. The Victory is a very decent hotel in a convenient location on Shamian Island. We were there for an adoption trip, and found the staff to be very accomodating. The room was clean and I appreciated that they had a "clean water" faucet so we could brush our teeth or get a drink of water without having to keep using bottled water.

Nice soft beds. A bit beat up, and some odd, outdated decor but very quiet. The air conditioning left a film of damp condensation on every surface. Location was nice, but the river view of the entire island has been ruined by the island-long on-ramp to the White Swan hotel. Not a lot of choices for dinner on the island either.

As long as you don't buy anything there, the hotel itself is wonderful and wonderfully located. If you do plan on using services there, maybe somewhere else is better. This was my third time to the Guangdong Victory Hotel. I love the area the hotel is at (Shamian Island), surrounded by green and nice walking areas as well as good dining options - all walking distance. On the other hand hotel bureaucracy makes it difficult to put up with (if China is bureaucratic this hotel makes double score by having absurd rules […] like breakfast coupons when you prepay for breakfast and they sometimes give you the coupon and sometimes do not, they ask for very low deposit and if you use any service of the hotel then you get locked out of the room. They manage to make you feel horrible and they paying you a favor to be there. They also have entertainment that requires paying for and even though I know they are not the only hotel in china that does that, it´s not easy to get used to it. Lees meer

Friendly helpfull staff, good food and very comfortable, clean room. I have stayed in both the east and west wings on a number of occasions over the last 3 years and would not rush to stay anywhere else. The hotel is well positioned on the Pearl river with plenty of good restaurants near by and good shopping a short stroll away.

A quiet and easy location for Guangzhou and definitely a haven away from the busyness and traffic of Guangzhou city. We stayed in the East building and it is safe and pretty at night strolling on the island and along the pearl river near by. The hotel is close to the metro which is easy to use and you could always catch a taxi from there.The hotel staff […] were friendly and could communicate in English. The room service was almost immediate and we felt well looked after but left alone. The breakfast was fine with plenty of choices both Asian and European. I stayed in the west wing March 2012 because the reviews on Expedia seemed good about this hotel however i got a bit of shock when i arrived if im honest. The room wasnt very clean, wallpaper peeling, cracks in ceiling, window dirty, carpet stained and smelt, furniture chipped and I could not get a signal for the free hotel wifi unless in the lobby. Location is good. Nice and quiet hotel. Pleasant Neighbourhood. I stayed in the West Wing and the standard room is extremely small. Toilet is newly renovated but furniture is old. I was told that the East Wing room is larger and nicer. The service staff were helpful and overall I would stay I had a nice and pleasant stay.

I have no regrets to recommend this hotel for everyone who plans to Guangzhou for leisure travel. The room, washroom, breakfast and service are better than my expected. I stayed two nights at the executive room of its West Wing. The room is well renovated and its washroom is really large and clean. Its complimentary breakfast buffet are free and delicious. […] And the hotel gave us an afternoon tea/coffee with cookies voucher every day to enjoy (FREE). Only 10 minutes walk to Chinese massage shop with have Chinese Herbal Doctoring service. Only 10 minutes taxi to every famous shopping street and other parks. The only weakness is its location is quite far away (nearly 25 mintues of taxi distance) from the Guangzhou East Train station with expensive hotel car service (about 200RMB each way). I love Shamian Island, where Guangdong Victory is located, with it's artistic and art deco buildings. So very different from the rest of Guangzhou. Unfortunately, can't say the same of Guangdong Victory's service. First of, it a bit confusing re their East and West wing. Then they have various room categories to deal with that you won't be able to […] make rhyme or reason out of. We had the Business Executive Suite. I requested for a non smoking room with a king sized bed. At least they got the non smoking right. As for the king sized bed, if what we got was a king sized bed, then I must be a giant!!! (I'm actually just 5 feet 6 inches tall) Worst part came when I brother-in-law and his wife decided to join us on this trip. I booked another room a couple of days later and got the same price. However, when we arrived to check in, we were informed that my bro in law's room is on the West Wing which is the smoking wing, despite my non smoking king sized bed request. We complained and showed our booking forms and the front desk staff, after passing us around from staff member to staff member finally got around to explain that both bookings, mine and my bro in law's, were done on separate days and that mine had a "promo" upgrade to the East Wing (non smoking) while my bro in law's didn't hence they will have to stay in a smoking room. After much argument, then the objective became evident, to be "upgraded" to a non smoking room, bro in law will have to pay RMB50 more a night. They just agreed as we were dead tired from traveling so far. But this just goes to show that there seems to be something terribly wrong with this hotel. After all that brouhaha about promos and discounts, smoking or non smoking, when we checked out, the front desk actually forgot to charge my bro in law that add'l RMB50!!! Lees meer

Eight minute walk from main shopping and eating areas and although other restaurants in direct area were more expensive a meal in the hotel cost only $22 for two. Quiet and relaxing however stairs to negotiate main road could cause problems for those with handicaps.Otherwise a good stay.

1. Don't select any room higher than the lowest priced category, you'll get the same regular room in the end. I have stayed in this hotel five times and it doesn't matter what I had selected : "Superior" or "Business" , I always end up with the lowest category room, so why waste the extra few dollars!! 2. Make sure the receptionist(s) return the "guarantee" […] credit card slip that they used to hold funds, even then my credit card was mysteriously charged HK$ 5,084 by an entity (not this hotel) after I checked out., 25th November 2011. The hotel is in a good location and a good neighborhood. We have stayed in this hotel in the past 10 years when we traveled to Guangzhou. However, we had a bad experience this time when we stayed in the hotel. First, we paid for a non-smoking room and was told the room was a non-smoking room from Expedia. But we arrived in the hotel and got to our room, […] the smoking smell was so strong we could not stand it. Then we were told that they would do some treatment to make the room as a non-smoke room. Since the room is small, we did not believe the room would be okay since we are very sensitive to smoking smells. Then we were told that the only non-smoking rooms are available in the executive class and some business class rooms. So we had to pay more to upgrade to a non-smoking executive room. The staff of the hotel did tried to help us, but we did not understand why our reservation did not tell us the truth. We hope this is not a way to lure the customers as a way of business practice. I live in Hong Kong, so I use this hotel every time I visit Guangzhou, which is at least twice a year. We used to stay in the East building, but since they renovated the West building, we prefer to stay there. This hotel is excellent value and the buffet breakfast is of decent quality. Guangdong Victory Hotel is an excellent place while people traveling in Guangzhou, nice and convienient location, great customer service, remodeled nice room with safe. So I will always book this hotel for my trip to Guangzhou each time. I just stayed there in August, 2011. I will visit again next Spring.

Hotel is very good. For the price it is a great value. Located on Sha Main Island gives it an uncrowded (rare) locale from which to base and see the city. It is less than 1/2 mile from the Line 1 HongSha Metro stop which gives great access to explore Guangzhou. Although plentiful and cheap metered cabs are available to go from place to place. Staff […] was very friendly and helpful. Language is a slight problem, but patience on your part usually gets someone with enough English skills to communicate and get what you needed done. Staff was also very helpful with non-hotel recommendations (where and how to get a sim card for your cell phone, best bank to exchange for RMB). Wifi exists, but is iffy on floors 3 and above. Shamian Dao is a great location, which is much quieter than the rest of Guangzhou. Early in the morning, locals are out on the street playing badminton on the footpath and doing tai chi. We stayed in an Executive Room in the West Building (which contrary to many of the reviews we read is actually the older building, although recently renovated). The […] only downside is that the gym and other facilities are around the corner in the East building, but it's a short walk. We found the staff to be generally helpful and to have pretty competent English (not perfect, but pretty good). The food on Shamian Dao is much more expensive and touristy compared to other areas. Consider walking across the canal, past the Qingping market (also called the medicine market) and down the side streets to eat in little hole in the wall places (if you're adventurous). Lees meer
