Zeer goede service richting vliegveld.

The hotel was a haunted hotel, the shower was tiny and small and some part of the carpet in my room was ripped.

I thoroughly enjoyed the history of the hotel. Your desk clerk/auditor, Priscilla was a delight. She took time with me to explain some of the history and was helpful with anything I asked. There were 2 other ladies that were on the desk on Thursday evening and they too helped me by getting the super shuttle called for me and have everything ready for […] my early departure. I would not hesitate booking again should I return to Phoenix and wil recommend it to my friends, Thank you so much, Jan Lees meer
"Not too bad, not too good"
I couldn't find an outlet in my bathroom. The hotel is on central air, so you can't adjust the temp of the individual rooms. Most of the lighting is florescent making everything look washed out. The artwork that adorns the hallways looks like it was put together by a 5th grader for a school project. Overall, the hotel is old and rundown, but it is centrally […] located and that is really the only reason I will stay here again. Lees meer
"Hotel San Carlos, Phoenix"
This is a small historic hotel that has seen the likes of Clark Gable and others from the era. It is reminiscent of European hotels, quaint but a bit dated. The staff were pleasant and tried to please, and the location was extremely convenient - just 2 blocks from the convention center. No breakfast is served on the premise, but there are a number […] of local places close by to eat - except on the weekend, when a slightly longer walk is required. The hotel has a nice lounge and is also adjacent to an Irish Pub which proved to be a plus. It is also close to many good restaurants, including those in the Phoenix Center, only 3 blocks away. Our room was small but comfortable, if a bit dated. The walls were surprisingly thin, so we had to get used to the noise from the 2 families in nearby rooms. I am sure they only had a couple of children, however it sounded at times as if there were at least a dozen roaming the halls, when in fact, most of the time they were actually in their rooms! Nonetheless, that is a bit of the luck of the draw, so we weren't terribly bothered. Overall it was a pleasant stay, however what did bother us and became our major problem was internet access. While it is available in the hotel, apparently the system is not up to the demand, and we were unable to connect reliably. This caused some difficulty for us from a work standpoint and should be taken into account by any traveler who needs consistent access. In their defense, I will say that they do have a business center, so it should be possible to get most things done there if not in the room. If you are looking for history and atmosphere and are not too bothered by the need for the most modern technology, then this could be the place for you. Lees meer
"Mixed bag"
Nice decor downstairs, good attached bar and food, but not hot water, old European like rooms.
"Hotel San Carlos"
The hotel must have been nice in its time. However, today it is shabby and a little creepy. It has a crime and ghost theme going on that I could have done withoutl It advertised antiques in the room and what it had was cheap reproductions and it could be fixed up to be charming. It was clean and it was not dangerous but for the money I could have stayed […] someplace else and will the next time in Phoenix. Lees meer
"Right in downtown Phoenix"
For one night was OK. I couldn't stand coming in or going out the smell of old cooking oil in the restaurant in front of the hotel. The smell permeate the lobby that was not at all pleasant.

"Be careful"
Access to the downtown attractions is great. The street people lying on the sidewalks that accompanied our Bistro breakfast--not so much. The room was tiny; the hallways were noisy. The history is interesting, but this would be a better museum than hotel. Wouldn't stay here again even for the convenience.

"Nice time good people on staff."
Quaint place with old time character so you should know that before you book it. The staff was very helpful Ghost Lounge was a great place to relax and super girls on bartender duty. Made it a fun time!
"Hotel San Carlos"
The price of this hotel is outrageous for how outdated the hotel is! I did not feel safe using their "Business Center" as it was a darkly lit room with some really shady furniture in it. There aren't individual temperature controls in each room. You can "control" the temperature by opening and closing the ONE vent only. The temperature in the shower […] is incredibly unreliable and can be either scalding or cold--good luck getting a "comfortably warm" shower! The hotel staff is incredibly helpful and tried to accomodate as much as possible. The hotel is just old and the structure does not allow for a more upscale hotel. The neighborhood is very close to the Phoenix Convention Center, which is what attracted me. However, there are many homeless people that would harass us while eating at the Bistro located on the bottom of the hotel. The hotel staff was really good about intervening but was still rather disconcerting. I would highly recommend looking for a different hotel unless you are desperate! (You can find something a bit cheaper for the same quality or better!) Lees meer
The hotel staff was wonderful - minus an older woman who worked at the front desk (I believe her nametag said Night Shift Supervisor) she was incredibly rude & I honestly can't believe she works in a customer service position. The hotel would benefit from letting her go and promoting ANYONE else at the front desk, as they were all polite & helpful with […] directions & recommendations. Rooms were a bit small for the price, but the hotel's history makes up for it. Be sure to ask the bartender at the Ghost Lounge about her ghost stories! Lees meer
"Historic Hotel in downtown"
This was a step back in time, and the staff was excellent!!! Sadly the room was tiny and no bathtubs only shower stalls in the teeny bathrooms. But it was still a fun place to visit.

"I'd emphasize very historic, but not boutique"
If I had paid one penny more than the discounted rate I would have blown a gasket. (I did know fellow conference attendees who paid more than twice what I did.) This hotel needs a face lift so very badly -- the location for downtown and the Convention Center is great -- but the facilities are quite old, badly maintained, and beyond outdated. For instance, […] the old TV was like a model I recently tried to give to Goodwill -- and they refused it! As other reviews note, the water temp is inconsistent to the point of scalding/freezing (worse the later in the morning you shower). The toilet reminded me of one found in a high school locker room 40 years ago. The housekeeping staff did a great job trying to make a silk purse from a sow's ear; the front desk staff, while generally sweet, was incompetent and ill-trained. If not renovated soon, the San Carlos will resemble an establishment customarily booking guests by the hour. Lees meer
"Not worth Stars"
I had read the previous reviews about how old the hotel is, how one can hear every noise through the vents, and how the lounge/bar is loud till the wee hours in the morning, but gave the hotel a shot anyway. The reviews were right. The hotel was conveniently located and the pool was ok, but come on, it's not worth three stars. Maybe 2. For the price […] I paid, I could have spent another 4 days at the Budget Inn and would have had cleaner rooms, better service, and less noise. Reduce the price or reduce the stars. Lees meer
"Very old and not well maintained"
Hotel San Carlos was little value for the money. They say there is air-condition, but it is centralized. You cannot open the window and thus have little possibility to control the temperature in the room. The interior including bathroom is like walking into a 60 year place (it is actually from 1928, so some updates have taken place. There is no room […] service and no mini bar. I did not think there was a coffeemaker or even a plastic cup until I found a little door on the side of the television cabinet. The only good thing is proximity to the convention center, but it does not add up. Would not stay there again. Lees meer

Hotel staff was courteous and helpful, however, our room was over the bar/nightclub, and the music was LOUD and pounding till 2am!!!
"Hotel San Carlos - PHX"
I stayed for a business convention, and would not recommend anyone stay here for that purpose. It is a nice (boutique) hotel for history lovers or for a getaway weekend, but is definitely not suited for the business traveler. Overly small rooms, erratic shower temps, no business center, no A/C, all made for a poor experience.
"Good location"
I booked here because it was very reasonable for the downtown location. The hotel was fine, obviously old, but perfectly acceptable. The bathroom was a little on the unappealing side, not because it felt dirty, but because it just felt old, but not in a charming way. Parking cost more than I expected; the only option to park at the hotel was to use […] the valet service. The "self-park" was at a nearby lot, but I was advised that I had to pay to come and go if I used that lot. So I ended up using the valet parking option. The wait for my car, the two times I needed it, was a little slow. Lees meer

"Do not stay here!"
I was supposed to stay at the San Carlos this past week and upon arrival, I knew that I couldn't stay. While I was checking in another guest asked the front desk staff a question and neither staff member answered even when it was repeated. The night supervisor was teaching a new staff on how to check in a guest. The supervisor was wearing a plain white […] tshirt and was not professional. After my 10 minute long check in process, I went to my room where I found ripped carpeting, really old furniture, and the bathroom that had the drain of the shower right next to the toilet. Do yourself a favor nd don't put yourself through this experience. I left within 5 minutes of getting to my room. Lees meer
"A must location to stay for R'n'R runners"
The hotel seems to be like an entrance to a time warp in the midst of modern buildings that surround the downtown area. For me it was a matter of luck finding out about San Carlos: It came from a runner whom I met at the Pomona Fairplex Half Marathon, which happened we talked about my desire to run the Arizona R'R marathon, consequently he jumped to […] suggest for me to stay at San Carlos. The best decision and the beginning of many goodtime memories of my Phoenix experience. You'll never get lost in Phoenix, the place is iconic. Lees meer
"Great Time on New Years"
Have always wanted to stay at the old San Carlos for it's nod to Phoenix days long ago & got the opportunity to do so NYE. Stayed here in lieu of some of the newer hotels in DT Phx. Walking distance to light rail and City Scape where we had comedy show tickets that night. Stay was great. Rooms smaller but you stay here for the ambiance. Party was still […] going on at the lounge when we got back from show around 1:30 a.m., grabbed an awesome burger from the restaurant downstairs who stayed open for the crowd. Lees meer
"Perfect if you're nocturnal and like cold showers"
Apparently the great low price attracts a rowdy crowd.... we were awoken numerous times during the night by loud people, crying babies, security, blaring music outside on the street. A little tired in the morning... nothing a hot shower can't fix, right? Yeah, except the shower was luke warm, scalding hot when the toilet is flushed, and then right back […] to cold. We will definitely spring for a nicer hotel next time. The hotel staff was super nice though! Lees meer

"Love downtown Phoenix"
This hotel is old and haunted, maybe, and we love the oldness of it and history. This is not for people that want lavish comfort but people that love history. All sorts of famous actors and actresses stayed here. Mae West, Marylyn Monroe, John Wayne and Carole Lumbard. Also, Seamus's Irish pub downstairs next to it is great.
"historic hotel in a convenient location"
What else could you ask for? A sweet price. Oh, they have that, too. Contrary to a previous review, the wifi was fine. My family and I were absolutely charmed by San Carlos.
"Hotel San Carlos needs new management"
pounding music in the bar downstairs but nobody dancing. The room has not been updated since WWII. Noises all night long in the hallway. Bed is in view of the entry door to the room and the hallway light comes all around the door to make the entire room glow. Just not worth the money.
"Great Historic Place"
We weren't in Phoenix for more than a night, but it was terrific staying at pretty much the only historic building in the area. Sweet, clean rooms, bathroom with character, nice staff, pretty lobby, and a terrific bar right downstairs. If you're into something high-brow or superhuge, this isn't the place for you, but if you want something with personality […] and charm, check yourself in. We would definitely stay here again. "Clean, courteous, and quirky -- on weeknights"
I loved the local flavor of this hotel: very courteous staff, cute quirky rooms, and an interesting historical story. It's right downtown and I could get to every place I needed to be on foot (a light rail station is right across the street as well). I had a very pleasant stay on a Wed. and Thurs. night. The weekend, though, was a different story. The […] hotel is not sound proof and it was extremely noisy, with music from the lounge (I was on the 4th floor), noise from partying guests in other rooms, and noise in the hallways. If you want a quiet place for a weekend getaway, this is not it. Lees meer

"San Carlos Hotel, Phoenix"
Great location, nice greeting staff, comfortable rooms. Bathroom small but adequate. Neat and clean. It is olde but nice upkeep A great bargain compared to hotels twice the price. I took Light rail from the airport to the hotel, a two block walk. Cost me $1.75. Would go back to this hotel in a moment.
"charming historic hotel"
The hotel is small by modern standards but gives all the ammenities the other "luxury" hotels make you pay for . I love the vintage decor and the location was perfect in relation to convention hall. The bar was unique but bistro and service was slow. They could work on that and desk service. Overall qaint and and comfortable.
"Hotel San Carlos - Phoenix"
An older hotel (1928) that was very clean. It appears that many of the fixtures of the original construction are still being used but worked well. There was a certain feel of "history" present with the sidewalk engravings that included Gable, Lombard (I wonder if they had separate rooms), Cary Grant and other stars during that era. While the San Carols […] did not invent walls with sound barriers; it was very comfortable. The service was excellent. While not as pricey has it's neighbors; Hyatt, Sheraton, Wyndam, etc, it was a very pleasant bargain and I would stay there again. Lees meer
"Fails at providing the basics"
PROS: - Friendly and helpful service CONS: - Central air. This means the temperature of the rooms is set DOWNSTAIRS. The only control you have is whether to let that air into the room or not via a vent. Oh, and the air is super dry. - Windows don't open - Wireless internet was unusable. Cut on and off and too slow to even use email or surf the web. - […] Walls are paper thin. I was awakened by someone throwing up in the room next door to me...at 3am. On a Thursday night! - Hot and cold are switched in the shower. Not a big deal except when you did not get a lot of sleep because the person in the room next to you kept you up most of the night and you turn on the shower and wonder why it just won't warm up. - TV volume button broken. No biggie, I don't watch much TV, but still, I could not change the volume so some stations were too loud and others could not be heard. Lees meer
"Great value"
This hotel was clean and comfortable, but had a few issues to be aware of. 1. Shower water became scalding hot often because of old pipes, not good for kids. 2. No individual control over ac or heat, howver it was a comfortable temperature.

"Quaint, but small"
Has some nice old fashioned charm, but the rooms are REALLY small. There is no room in the bathroom to set your toiletries. There were also some creepy people in the surrounding neighborhood, kinda made me nervous.
"Loud"
The room it was very retro and I loved the history of the hotel. However the downside to staying in a older hotel is that the sound of every room on the floor can be heard in your room. The vents carried the noise throughout the hotel. If you want to relax and get a good night sleep this hotel is not for you. Sleepy in Phoenix
"The Line Between Historic and Filthy"
I stayed at the Hotel San Carlos because it was conveniently located. That's about the only good thing I can say about it, other than it truly was historic. I loved the historic, but there is a line between historic and filthy. When I reached my room at 11pm after a late check-in, there was a puddle of brown water on the ledge under my mirror. The sink […] was covered in black filth. I was too exhausted after driving from Tucson to call and argue with the front desk that close to midnight, and it was cleaned by the next day. The standards of cleanliness are subpar at this establishment, and are in need of drastic improvement before I could possibly recommend it to anyone. It is also above a pub, and I heard drunk people yelling into the night as I was trying to go to sleep that night, even though it was just a Wednesday and downtown Phoenix is usually pretty calm. They do not serve breakfast, and the nearest Starbucks isn't within easy walking distance if you have a morning appointment. Overall, I maintained a sense of humor about everything, but I wouldn't recommend it if you aren't willing to do that. My second and thankfully final night at the Hotel San Carlos, my neighbors were apparently roped in to getting an extremely drunk, loud woman back into her room, which was right across the hall from mine. It felt like my college freshman dorms all over again! Unlike the filth of my room, this situation was not the management's fault, but it's a result of the location that should be kept in mind. There are other, better hotels in the area. Lees meer
