We hadden een kamer met uitzicht op de tropische tuin, prachtig. Kamer van alle gemakken voorzien. Wel veel problemen gehad bij het inchecken: men vroeg om onze creditcard als borg voor eventuele uitgaven die wij tijdens ons verblijf zouden maken. Onze card werkte echter niet en dat werd als een (abnormaal) groot probleem gezien; ondanks dat wij aanboden om tot 500 dollar cash te 'betalen'; men wilde ons zelfs in 1e instantie als gast weigeren, terwijl het hotel natuurlijk al via hotels.com betaald was. Zeer onaangenaam en men ging pas meewerken nadat we erg hebben opgespeeld; uiteindelijk 100 dollar borg betaald. Geen leuk begin van een verder overigens prima verblijf daar.

Prima locatie om van daaruit San Diego te ontdekken. Naar o.a. de Zoo, het Balbaopark en ophaaladres van huurauto gebracht en opgehaald met shuttledienst van het hotel, ideaal. Schone kamer, van alle gemakken voorzien. Redelijk ontbijt met plastic bordjes en bestek.

Heerlijk hotel, niet ver van Sea World, San Diego Zoo, uss Midway, Gaslamp, Old Town en het strand. Allemaal binnen acceptabele tijd per auto te bereiken. Super mooi hotel met ruime kamers. Het is wel een gehorig hotel, wat vooral in het weekend lawaai met zich mee bracht van buren. Door de weeks was de marine aan de overkant van het water met trainingen bezig. Dit vonden wij niet heel storend, maar het geluid is er wel. Verder zit ontbijt er niet bij in en is heel duur als je dat nog bij wilt nemen. Dat is echt een minpunt. Als je dit hotel boekt, hou er rekening mee dat het twee locaties zijn. Wij zaten in de tower en het 'grotere gebeuren' was verder op. We hadden wel een lobby, servicebalie, restaurant en verwarmd zwembad, dus dat is prima voor elkaar. De starbucks en de grote lobby van de foto's zit in het andere gedeelte. De kamers zijn echt super ruim! We hadden een ruim zitgedeelte en eettafel erbij, en dat voor een gewone kamer. Uitzicht op zee was erg mooi.

Het hotel ligt in de zogenoemde hotel circle, een een groep van meerdere hotels rondom een snelweg die door de stad loopt. Het hotel was goed geprijst en zeer schoon en netjes, wat dat betreft een grote aanrader. Met een (klein) zwembad, spa en fitness al met al zeer comfortabel en een goedkoop alternatief voor de dure hotels op centralere plekken. Nadeel is wel dat je niet naar de stad kan lopen en altijd met een bus of auto moet, en zoals gezegd niet op een romantische locatie. Bus/metrostation is wel in de buurt op circa 10 minuten lopen, halte fashion valley (groot winkelcentrum). Personeel zeer vriendelijk, ook mogelijkheid om auto te huren (verhuurder zit in het hotel).
Ligging.
The Sofia Hotel bevindt zich in San Diego, dicht bij Westfield Horton Plaza, Vliegdekschipmuseum en Maritiem museum van San Diego. In de buurt liggen ook San Diego Convention Center en Dierentuin van San Diego.
Hotelvoorzieningen.
The Sofia Hotel heeft een healthclub en een fitnesscentrum. Draadloos internet is gratis beschikbaar in openbare ruimtes. De zakelijke voorzieningen bij deze 3,5-sterrenaccommodatie zijn onder andere een businesscentrum, vergaderruimtes voor kleine groepen en vergaderruimtes. Dit hotel voor zaken biedt diverse eetgelegenheden, zoals een restaurant en een bar/lounge. Het personeel kan op verzoek een conciërgeservice, hulp bij excursies/tickets en zakelijke diensten regelen. Extra voorzieningen zijn onder andere meertalig personeel, een wasserij en een open haard in de lobby. Parkeerruimte is tegen betaling beschikbaar, maar beperkt. Dit is een rookvrije accommodatie. De volledige renovatie van deze accommodatie werd in februari 2007 voltooid.
Hotelkamers.
The Sofia Hotel heeft 211 kamers met airconditioning die zijn voorzien van een (laptop)kluis en een kluis. Alle bedden hebben een pillowtop-matras met premium beddengoed. Bij betaling kan een snelle internetverbinding (via kabel) worden aangeboden. Elke televisie heeft kanalen via de kabel en betaalfilms. Elke kamer beschikt over een bureau, een gratis krant en een telefoon met directe buitenlijn met voicemail. Elke badkamer is voorzien van designer toiletartikelen, make-up/scheerspiegels en een föhn.
Elke kamer is voorzien van een magnetron, een koelkast en een koffiezetapparaat/waterkoker. Extra voorzieningen zijn onder andere een strijkplank/strijkijzer en een klokradio. Bovendien kun je op verzoek gebruikmaken van voorzieningen zoals massagebehandelingen op de kamer, hypoallergeen beddengoed en extra handdoeken/beddengoed. Een huishoudservice is dagelijks beschikbaar. Op de kamers van The Sofia Hotel mag niet worden gerookt.
Afhankelijk van het hotelbeleid kan voor extra personen een toeslag worden aangerekend.
Bij het inchecken dien je in het geval van incidentele kosten een erkend identiteitsbewijs en een creditcard voor te leggen.

De luchthaven van San Diego ligt vlak bij het water en ten noordwesten van het centrum. Je vindt bij de luchthaven het Diego Convention Center, het PetCo Park-stadion en de Gaslamp Quarter's. De restaurants en bars van deze wijk zijn het middelpunt van het nachtleven van de stad. Balboa Park en de San Diego Zoo zijn de groene strook van deze stedelijke jungle. Op Coronado Island heb je een prachtig uitzicht op de skyline van de stad.

Het hotel ligt op een steenworp afstand van gaslampdistrict. De service is hoog en vriendelijk. We zouden zo weer terug gaan. De kamer was iets kleiner dan we gewent waren maar uiterst smaakvol ingericht met alles erop en eraan.

"Quaint decor for a nice stay"
We really enjoyed our stay at the Sofia. It was a very clean, easily accessible hotel within walking distance of the Gaslamp Quarter. The room was very nice (a bit small) and the hotel staff was very friendly and accomodating.

"A great place to everywhere in downtown San Diego"
The location is great! We can go very easily everywhere downtown in San Diego. Close to a big shopping center, a convenient store, bus stop, trolley stop, lots of restaurants, Gaslamp, the Convention center, Ocean, a grocery store, etc. A bit bigger room will be make it even better!

We enjoyed the location of this hotel because it was close to the train station and the Gaslamp district. We had a terrible night's sleep because the AC was either on and freezing or completely off. The windows didn't open, and with the rooms as tiny as they were the air got extremely dry during the night which made it difficult to sleep. My boyfriend and I decided go book this hotel after reading all the positive reviews. We only had a couple days vacation and felt this would be a perfect place to go. Staff was WONDERFUL! Everybody from the valet to the check in personne, our great waitress in the restaurant to our housekeeper were all very professional and courteous. "A bit pricey, but a very nice hotel"
Overall, good. I was upgraded from delux king to 2 bedroom suite. Size was good. My only complaint, no roomservice. For a guy getting literally sick and tired from travel, walking anywhere sounded exausting. Other than that and the mandatory valet, nice place for the area. "Great location, maintenance starting to suffer"
We've stayed here a few times over the past 4 years and it's still a great hotel for it's location, but attentiveness to their maintenance seems to be waning. Our Queen suite had well-worn carpets and 2 CFL bulbs that were out. The service was still quite good but as the rooms are quite small (if you don't get a suite), we will consider other hotels […] in the area where once we would've only stayed here. Lees meer

The hotel was in a great location convenient to the Gaslamp area and to public transportation to tourist attactions. The room was nice and very clean. The only negative thing I have to say is that there was no view.

"Disappointing"
The guys running the valet parking were nice, but for what you pay they should be parking your car in a covered structure. My room had a nice view of the lot behind the building where they parked the cars. At least it was fenced off. The room was small, but nicely decorated. The bathroom was too small. The shower was missing a glass door where you'd […] think one would belong. Have was covered by a glass wall, but since there was no door water would go everywhere. It didn't not appear as though it was missing, but intended to be this way. I will NOT be staying here again and would advise you to look elsewhere for what they charge. Lees meer

"Customer service is awesome!!"
This was our first time in San Diego let alone staying in a boutique hotel. When we arrived I guess we were booked in a smaller room but when the front desk agent saw all of our luggage he upgraded us to a room that would accommodate us comfortably. The best part of our stay was the bellman/ concierge. I can't recall his name but they were all amazing. […] I would definitely I back. "Stylish and cozy"
This hotel has become my home away from when traveling into San Diego for business. It's very stylish, but if you're traveling w/more than one person, you may want to get larger room. They tend to run very "cozy". Regardless, I stay there over and over.

Very nice hotel. That you do not have breakfast included for 150 bucks a night is normal for the US, I guess. Only issues: The television set was a small oldschool tube tv. Did not see any of those things in years. But then: Normal for the US as well, I guess ;-) And the ventilation was kind of loud during the night. "Nice Hotel"
I stayed until 10 days from March 6. There is also the Amtrak station and shopping malls and supermarkets nearby, I was able to spend within the comfort of your living. Security was also good that night. People of the hotel receptionist was very kind.

We loved the Sofia -- great location, a little bit funky, very good service. The rooms are small, but we were perfectly comfortable and saved a lot of money over other hotels. The convention center is only 6-7 blocks away and was a very reasonable walk through a safe neighborhood. Lots of restaurants of all kinds are nearby. "Cute hotel with character but a few drawbacks"
The Sofia is a hotel with character, is connected to Currant restaurant (delicious but a little pricey), and has overall a good location for the Convention Center, exploring the gaslamp area, and downtown/waterfront. We were there during a conference when the city was completely booked. When we checked into our room, I noticed we were missing a trash […] can and then noticed a note someone had left on the bathroom door. It warned that a wineglass had been broken and to not step on the floor due to glass. This was strange since it seems like the cleaning crew would have addressed this issue and removed the note. Anyway, I told the front desk about it and asked that the remaining glass (there were still little pieces) be cleaned up. The front desk totally ignored this request - there was still glass on the floor hours later when we returned to the room, but by then it was late enough that we just put towls on the floor and went to sleep. Other than that, the stay was great, but that was a pretty significant problem so it certainly impacts my overall opinion of the hotel. I do not know if I would stay again or not, which is too bas as the hotel is quite cute otherwise. Lees meer

"Sofia Hotel - Downtown Elegance"
I just used my reward points to book this hotel for my fiance's birthday night. It was very nice, clean and very old fashioned. However, everything inside was very modern. I wish I could have stayed another night.
"Nice Hotel for a Reasonable Price"
Needed to book a room for a night at the last minute due to a change of plans with my lodging. I booked at an extremely great price. Called in to see what time check-in was and was told that if they had enough rooms available, they would let me check in early. I was able to check in at 10AM, which was definitely a plus for me. The hotel was very cozy […] with only 6 floors and a few rooms on each. The room was small, but perfect for me by myself. The front desk representatives were extremely kind and helpful. Even after I checked out, they offered to hold my bags as went outside the hotel to grab some breakfast. The location was great: there was a shopping mall, an assortment of shops and bars, and restaurants surrounding the hotel, all within walking distance. The ONLY reason why I did not give this particular stay a perfect score is because of the loud construction happening behind the hotel that went on from the early morning until the late afternoon. hotel service was courteous and helpful. The walk to the convention center was definitely longer than 4 - 6 blocks...depending where in the center your convention is being held it could be 30 - 30 min walk.

My girlfriend was impressed, she loved it. Now, me, Ive been to a thousand sheik modern hotels, and this one is pretty comparable. Good room, good view, good service, clean rooms, good service etc. My only gripe is that I paid a little too much in light of being charged an extra $9 service fee (that they charge everyone). "Hone Base"
The location was reasonably equidistant to the locations in which we wanted to spend some time and explore the condominium choices for a possible second home. I was handy to a number of options and has a nice restarant/lounge option we utilized ocasionally.

Had to leave after two nights due to construction noise. They are building an evevated parking lot next door with a lot of jack hammering vibration nd related noise.

We (my girlfriend and I) had a wonderful room at the Sofia hotel! Service was amazing with the exception of the mandatory vallet parking . There is no way around it, especially in downtown s.d. There was some construction going on but The clerk dropped some of the service charges due to the inconvenience of the noise!! Good man this Brian fellow
"Surprise fee for "free internet""
All in all the hotel was quite good, except the "free internet" rip off. The staff explained that the fee was made, because the owner wanted to advertise his hotel in a certain price range, basically a hotel search engine scam. This apparently in full agreement with the booking sites.
"Great getaway"
We loved this hotel. Clean, friendly and historical. Easy on and off from freeway, a big plus! Easy walk to Horton plaza and Gas Lamp District. Rooms are very small but classy and clean.
