The GEM Hotel - Midtown West, an Ascend Collection hotel in New York

Het hotel is prima geschikt voor een bezoek aan NY. Het ligt op ongeveer 10 minuten lopen van een metro station en ongeveer op een kwartier van Times Square. De hotelkamers zijn klein maar dat vonden wij geen probleem. De badkamer zag er schoon en redelijk modern uit. Het personeel was uitermate vriendelijk.

It was a nice stay. Only complaints are the size of the double bed rooms and the internet was very off/on. Other than that it was an excellent stay.

Really enjoyed the Hotel. Rooms were a little tight as with any NYC hotel, but the location can't be beat. It wasn't too expensive, and was worth the money for what we got out of it. Comfortable beds, clean bathroom, modern decor. The desk clerk was extremely nice, considering the people that were in front of us checking in were kind of dickish. We had a wonderful time at this hotel during our trip to NYC. We were attending a conference at the Javits Center which was only a short walk away! Easy access to Penn Station train at 34th st. The bed and sheets were so comfortable and soft!! Very clean room and bathroom. the staff was always welcome to give directions or subway recommendations. Taxi break station at the dunkin donuts and fuel station right behind the hotel, very easy to grab a cab. taxi from lga was very reasonable....on 9th and 10th st there are plenty of restaurants to choose from on the way to the subway. My fiancé and I stayed here during a visit to NYC for the 2012 NYIASA. The hotel was very helpful and allowed us to drop off our bags early in the morning, attend the show all day and still check in late that evening. The staff was very helpful and courteous. The rooms are a little on the small side But I'm fairly sure that is due to the building being […] older. The rooms, while small, are very well furnished and decorated. the staff was helpful and courteous. very clean rooms. the bed was comfortable. it was a very pleasant overnight stay. i would certainly stay there again and recommend it to friends.

We stayed in a king room and it was very neat and clean but extremely small...There was no closet for our luggage, my fiance and I were literally bumoing into each other everytime we moved...it was ridiculously small...I felt closterphobic. On the flip side, the staff was very friendly and we were only about 15mins walking distance from Time Square. […] I would not stay there again. Lees meer

When I got there I was in the middle of a rough trip having been to multiple locations prior to New York. The only thing that teed me off was that the clicker for the television did not work. It took a lot of visits to the room and a few hours to rectify and it was irritating. But the staff did do it's best to rectify it and the rest of my stay was […] conveient and fine. The front desk person was rude, but that's nothing new if you've read the other reviews. The room was filthy, I found bubblegum or something of the sort inside the sheets... Disgusting "hotel".

I chose this because it was practically next to my office and I did not want to walk far in the cold. The room was very tiny but clean. Only problem I had was that the heat unit was so loud that I could not sleep. It was late at night when I complained and they did not have a service person available. They did offer to move me to another room, but I […] did not want to move - so they brought me extra blankets. It was very comfortable, convenient and friendly. Fine for my brief stay. This hotel IS a gem!!

The hotel was decent, not a spacious as it claims to be. Our room was right next to the elevator which when being used can be heard in the room. It was okay but for the price, leaves much to be desired. Oh, and the wi-fi service is bad.

Rude staff, different employees are telling different things to customers. no sort of office or confrence room. rummaging thru hallways for hours on end at early am hours. opening door for roomservice instead of nocking. i will not be coming back

Good for one night visits

I needed a last minute affordable room, close to the studio I had a very early-starting all day meeting at the next day. I read the reviews and sure enough, GEM was close by, clean, cute and most importantly quiet. Granted it was a Tues night. The neighborhood is so-so, but I knew the area and sight-seeing/entertaining wasn't part of the plan anyway. […] The bed wasn't as comfy as other places I've stayed in but again, clean and quiet and nicely decorated for a one night stay more than made up for it. Good location...close to Javits Center. Very comfortable room and helpful staff.

Staff was very friendly. TV remote control did not work but I never got around to asking them to replace it because I was too buzy.

The hotel was in an ok location. The room was a bit small, but it didn't bother me other than the fact that it was in the BASEMENT!!! We were told that it was the only room in the whole hotel that only had one bed.It was the only room down there in the hotel staff quarters. There were racks with hangers on them by the door. The staff were going in and […] out of the door to the steps, which were located right next to our door, all night. The worst part of our stay was when we realized our shower did not work. Me and my boyfriend both tried for 10 minutes to get the shower to turn on, and when we called the front desk we were told that they don't know how to work the showers because they don't use them. Small, reasonably priced, great service, location perfect if you are staying around the midtown area. Wish bathroom was cleaner, but other than that, great place!

Three of us stayed in a room with two doubles. The room was small with not too much manuvering room, but we only needed a place to sleep for two nights. Hypo allergenic bedding was graciously provided. Very clean. Only a few blocks from Penn Station, easy walk. A bit more of a hike to the Times Square area, about a 30 minute walk. Having found this place on the web, you never know what you'll get. But it was like a little diamond in the rough - convenient to Penn Station which helped us, clean, very friendly staff. Room was a bit small/cozy but for a night of sleeping, it was wonderful! thank you!

We had a King size bed with 18" on each side of the bed and 1 foot of space at the end then a small desk. This was the smallest room I have ever stayed in. BUT it was very clean, the front desk personel were VERY helpful.

We could not have had a better experience with our hotel. The hotel held our bags all day before and after our stay and bent over backwards to help us out. The hotel was close to the train and subway and the staff had amazing food suggestions. A GREAT PLACE TO STAY, 5 STARS!

Hands down it was the worst experience I've ever had staying at a hotel in NYC. The staff was very friendly and nice, but the place itself is terrible. Oh, where should I even begin? The super-small rooms, the non-functional TVs that have only sports channels, no room service, no mini-bar, and - NO INTERNET. You get what you pay for in NYC. My King Size bed was the ENTIRE size of the room. There was literally less than 2 feet surrounding on any side of the bed.

The hotel is the diamond in the rough in the neighborhood it is in. Situated near the entrance to the Lincoln Tunnel there is a lot of traffic noise and you have to cross a ton of traffic to get to the hotel coming and going into midtown. I wouldn't recommend this if you are a tourist. However, if traveling for business like me and most likely taking […] cabs it is easy to access. I tried to find their preferred parking but couldn't and there isn't much parking nearby - something to keep in mind. hi All, This hotel is decrepit. It smells, the beds are very uncomfortable, the bathroom is falling apart and there are bugs. Please avoid at all costs... Not worth even a cheap fare.

I booked 3 nights online through hotels.com. The room was very small - I estimate approximately 200 square feet. It was attractively furnished, had a flat screen TV, and free wireless internet was included. The bathroom was updated, clean and plenty of towels were provided daily. There is no restaurant or food of any kind on the premises. The hotel […] is not located in a great neighborhood but Times Square is only a 20 minute walk away and it's easy to flag a taxi if you want one. The hotel staff was very friendly. In short I consider this to be little more than a comfortable, albeit expensive, crash pad but would stay there again if I could not find similar accomodations for less money. I travel a lot and the rate I paid felt very expensive for what I got. I understand this is more a statement about the cost of accomodations in NYC than it is a reflection on the relative value of this hotel. Considering midtown hotels are probably 2-3 times the price for a basic room, this might be the best one can hope for when visiting the Big Apple. Lees meer

Hotel room was great. Clean. Space and balcony. Very pleased with our stay

I needed to stay in the neighborhood, and this was the second hotel I've been in within half a mile. I felt safe, the room was clean, and the staff was nice. Negatives were having to go all the way to the basement for ice. My view was not inspiring and my air conditioning was challenged by the really hot conditions. It's a no-frills hotel (including the staff), great value for how clean and quiet the rooms are. The location is just so-so - there's really not much around the hotel at all, got a little scared walking by myself to the hotel at night. Cabs were easy to get. There's a corner gas stations where all the cabbies hang out. No restaurant, no store, no […] wine. Vending machine and ice downstairs. The front desk lady was incompetent. I booked via hotels.com, got confirmation number. Called hotel and they said that they have my reservation but didn't have any available rooms. I'd have to call back hotels.com and cancel my reservation. After back and forth on phone with Hotels.com and the GEM hotel for a solid hour, FINALLY she admitted that there was one room left with double beds. Great facility, ok location but price & quality of facility make up for the walk.

The Hotel is fine but the location (area) is not. I ended up not doing some things because walking outside the hotel was not very safe. Also not too convienent and if you can't get a taxi and have to walk to where your going hide your valuables.

Cozy and clean. Thin walls though. We could hear neighboring hotel room tenants. Friendly staff and just a few blocks from train station and Times Square.

Did a girls' trip to NYC with 4 friends. The hotel was easy located right off the Lincoln Tunnel. I reserved 2 double beds but when I got to the hotel, I was given a room with a king size bed. Thank goodness 1 girl wasn't able to stay because I don't know how we would of all fit in the king size bed. Great hotel at a great price. Rooms are small but clean, Looks like it may have recently been renovated. Free internet. Nice cafe just around the corner, and a gas station were all the cabs stop is very handy! Only downside is that the neighborhood is a bit "iffy" - I walked the four blocks from Penn Station, but might take a cab next time.
