Surf Inn in Gualala

I must say that we were very impressed with our stay at the Surf Inn (a.k.a) Surf Motel. Like in other comments, yes, the rooms are small. But let's be honest, you really dont spend a lot of time just "sitting in your room" when the scenery is so breathtaking. Here's what's important to us: #1. Cleanliness (YES the small rooms were VERY VERY CLEAN)!!!!.....Brie, […] the manager was very nice, and accomodating, she even offered a few suggestions on what to see and where to eat! (Bones Roadhouse was awesome! Excellent tip Brie) The Surf Inn serves up a hot breakfast each morning, waffles, eggs, sausage and homemade scones, coffee & juice. The decor was dated, but everything worked well. Not 5 star, but clean. The location was very good, near a great BBQ restaurant, and many other interesting shops within walking distance. The staff was friendly and helpful.

Location is nice, right next to the ocean. We were traveling through, and this place had what we needed for a fair price. Recommended!

We were a bit thrown off by the name as we drove past it three times looking for the Surf Inn. Turns out it is the Surf Motel. Which is ok, just not what we expected. They staff however was nice, and the electric fireplace kept us warm. Breakfast was awesome.

A small older motel situated at the mouth of the Gualala River. Beautiful views of the river and the beach. Room was very small and had only an electric space heater which was adequate after up and running for awhile. Needed to get an additional space heater for the bathroom. Worked well. The Inn was an enjoyable destination spot along one of the most beautiful stretches of California coast. You can walk for miles on the sand. My sisters and I rexcently meet at the Inn for a brief reunion and were very happy with the accomodations. Our room had a complete kitchen which was a wonderful surprise. Older hotel, but nice. We were disappointed in that we were right on the water and didn't have a view of it. We had to go outside and around the building for a nice view. Only 2 rooms have a view....

Simple, comfortable room; great view to watch the sunset, but wished the outdoor chairs were able to be placed closer to see the view; don't use the mapquest directions (passing Lake Sonoma) - go Rt 1; hot breakfast included, but wished it had some healthier options; we'll be coming back!

We were not disappointed by the accommodations. It is an older motel but it was in good repair and most comfortable. The feather top on the mattress made for a restful night's sleep. Nice place - older but cared for. An oceanfront room was available and we took it (as an upgrade) with no regrets. Our room was very cozy and comfortable and the view was terrific. You should see our sunset pictures.

Very reasonably priced and great location! The receptionist was very helpful and kind.

I loved this charming motel! It was just what we were looking for, a relaxing overnight on the coast in a great little ocean side town. The breakfast in the morning was perfect; eggs, sausage, fresh baked muffins, coffee. That alone saves you a trip out in the morning and the cost of breakfast elsewhere. We were very dissappointed that this place was a motel charging B&B or resort prices. We stayed in several other quality B&Bs on our way up the California/Oregon coast and the prices were not as much as the Surf Inn charged. The rooms looked like something out of the seventies and were badly in need of updating. Very very small room. Refrig and microwave in closet in bathroom. Feather mattress is more like a Mt.Everest of a pillow in the middle of the bed. VERY thin walls, bring fan. Room 115 SUCKS upgrade to ocean view if I were you. Cove Azul Restaurant across the street was AMAZING. Don't get up late for the free breakfast, it will be gone before 930 am, […] biscuits were hard as rocks. If you are just looking for a quick stop on the road where every other hotel is twice as much this will do just fine, slightly better than a hostel. Lees meer

I was not expecting as nice an experience as we had! The staff was very friendly, the accommodations were clean and just as described! We were made to feel welcome even with our three dogs, and the rooms had a full kitchen which was wonderful as we were traveling on a budget. The view was spectacular, perched just above the Gualala River and the Pacific […] Ocean (I(I swear I spotted whales on three separate occasions)! The breakfast was terrific and the invitation to take some goodies along our daily jaunts was refreshing. I can't wait to return, we had a lovely experience! Very clean, friendly staff, and fantastic breakfast. We enjoyed the beach cliff walking trail. It had a nice view of the ocean. We would stay again.

The room was clean and well kept. Breakfast was great and you can't beat the neighborhood. Close proximity to restaurants, shopping, and nature.

I stayed at the Surf Inn for business. First thing you should know it is called the Surf Motel. When I arrived I was greeted by a pleasant young lady. When I got to my assigned room, it was already occupied. There was a half naked older gentlemen in the room to my surprise. I was very embarrassed and apologized for disturbing him. The second room I […] was provided was also occupied. Finally the last room was vacant but I looked around to double check. The young lady was very apologetic and provided me a complimentary bottle of wine for the inconvenience and ensured me no one would enter my room unannounced. The location is in the heart of town and close to the business associate I was visiting. I didn't partake in the complimentary breakfast, but did grab a muffin to go that was undercooked. Next time I will stay at the Gualala Country Inn. A little more expensive but worth it. Lees meer

Room was very clean and the bed was comfortable. The wifi went in and out and the tv reception was not perfect. The staff is very proifesionnal and the view on the ocean is breathtaking. With in walking distance of everything. Nice staff, clean room and good price. With access to the Bluff Trail and has chairs to watch the ocean/sunset.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Surf Inn. The owner and other staff were very friendly and accomodating. The location is great, within a block of several restaurants and grocery stores. Even better, it's on a cliff overlooking the ocean! We walked the Gualala Bluff trail several times during our stay (it's less than 1/2 mile, but beautiful). The […] trail passes right behind the hotel. The room itself was quite small, but fully equipped with microwave, fridge, huge TV, DVD player, etc. We had read other reviews stating that the walls were thin (which they are), so we brought along a box fan to drown out any potential sounds, and that worked great. In fact, maybe if the owner reads this, he'll put a small box fan in each room. :) Also, some hooks on the walls and small shelves would make more efficient use of the small space. We slept well, and enjoyed a great breakfast in the morning. They prepared waffles, biscuits and gravy, eggs, sausage, and more. It was great! Excellent service.

The drive getting there was a challenge because of bad weather. But the motel went out of there way to make our stay comfortable, and made the late check in convenient. The motel was clean, friendly atmosphere, super check in lady (Brie). The breakfast had a huge selection to choose from; waffles, eggs, sausage, different types of cereal, yogurt, […] and the best biscuits & gravy for breakfast in the morning. It was so quiet, relaxing, and the lady working seen we were trying to take a family picture, she went out of her way to take an amazing family photo of us! What great service, nice people, very clean, terrific food, that made us want to have a return stay in Gualala. Thank you Surf Inn Motel, we will come back to visit. The Surf Inn was a great deal and in a wonderful location. We had our dog with us which made us really appreciate the trail along the bluff just outside the hotel. The breakfast in the morning was adequate and the staff was very friendly.

The provided breakfast was terrific- scones, custom waffles etc- and the proprietor set a very welcoming tone with his banter!

We loved this place. It is in a beautiful setting...along a bluff walk. Close to restaurants and a book store too. Breakfast was good. My husband found the bed perfect, our daughters thought them soft.

A nice, small and good hotel to stay in for a night or two. The free breakfast is small but more than adequate and the coffee is pretty good. I would stay here again if on the north central coast again. George Hayduke

There are few mid-range options in Gualala, with higher-end guests often staying at Sea Ranch. For those not in a position to rent one of these houses, the pickings are slim. The Surf Inn was well located, but not much else. The room was dark and dreary, even with every light turned on. The rug didn't appear to be completely clean and fresh, and the […] room had an off smell (mildew?). The bathroom was adequate. The best feature of the room was the overstuffed bed and comforter, which were, indeed, very comfortable. The service was lacking, however. On my one attempt at the complimentary breakfast, I was presented with ice-cold coffee (the carafe was simply sitting on the counter, and "Briana" told me she hadn't gotten around to filling the pump device from which it's ordinarily served. She was seated at the front desk doing absolutely nothing when I walked in, or while I was there). I was also asked whether I wanted eggs, but before I could answer was told that she "doesn't always make them, because no one ever eats them and it's such a waste." I gave up and made coffee in my room. The Inn provided Emeril Lagasse coffee, which was thin and tasteless. I had one cup, turned off the pot and left for the day. When I returned that night, I noticed that my room had been serviced, but the nearly-full pot remained in the coffee maker, missed by the cleaning staff. Finally, I could hear far more sound from the adjacent room than I would have expected. Lees meer

Lovely Motel without the price. The location was beautiful and for what we paid, was a comfortable clean and tasteful experience. The girl at the front desk was kind and helpful. The breakfast in the morning was quite good, great gravy. The bed in our room did seem slightly smaller than usual though.

I would recomend this hotel to anyone! Excellent rooms, very clean and roomy! Great breakfast! We will be back!

Very inexpensive to be staying on a cliff above the crashing ocean! There's a cliffside path (fenced in) with great views. To reach the beach you do need to drive a couple miles because your perch is also above the Gualala River blocking beach access. You see the fresh water roll into the ocean and you still get the birds, smells, and sounds of the […] Pacific. The room has a full kitchen with fully stocked coffee pot, microwave, large refridgerator, table, chairs, bowls, cooking pans, etc. We didn't use it because in the lobby you get a full breakfast of waffles, eggs, pork, muffins, orange juice.... There are seven lovely restraunts in walking distance from sea food to barbeque to pizza to bakery. Internet, tv, video, desk, and two Adarondak chairs in the room. It has it all for $100 less than similar motels of the area! I'll stay again gladly. Lees meer

Great place, much more attractive than the photos. Great view, comfy bed, nice people, delicious breakfast! Would have stayed longer if we could! Great dinner a block away at the BBQ joint, nice to be able to walk there after all that driving.

The hotel staff was very friendly and they made the breakfast from scratch eash morning. The scones were so good that we asked if we could take a couple along with us on our travels. We were invited to take as many as we wished and we were told the scones were made with the owners secret recipe daily. Briana was expecially friendly and accomodating. Hotel was just as pictured. Room was clean, tastefully decorated, with all the necessary amenities. The feather bed mattress was heavenly! The staff was kind, helpful and friendly. The continental hot breakfast was hot and fresh. I will use this hotel again when traveling in this area and will/have told my friends of it. Right by the ocean, nice path […] along the ocean cliff. The Surf Inn is well-maintained. They obviously work very hard caring for their buildings. The rooms are small, but very clean, and the ocean view is stunning. Gualala is a small, friendly little town where we found a delicious dinner at the Cove Azul restaurant which is within walking distance of the motel.

On the outside the Surf Inn is very unassuming. I opened the door to a lovely room with an extremely comfortable bed. There was a big flat screened TV, a microwave, fridge and a clean bathroom. Breakfast is homemade by the manager and as good as any B&B I've stayed in. Just a short path to the beach. I will go there again
