Space Hotel - Backpacker in Melbourne

Despite the very low price for a dorm room, the facilities and overal quality of the hostel was really great. If you only need a room to sleep in, this is the place to be! You just can't choose your roommates, one of my roommates was smelly and unhygienic. But if i really wanted a private place i could take a single room....

The location is pretty far from Melbourne Southern Cross Station if you are arriving by train. The facility was clean and had an over all pleasent presentation, but my room was not clean. This is what I would call, a "boutique hostel". It was a great place to stay for me for several reasons... (I am picky!) It was very clean, noise-free, with amazing staff, and in a perfect location. It was easy to get to Fitzroy, Carlton and other cool neighborhoods, but also right at the northern corner of CBD (downtown Melbourne) everything was a […] stones throw away. I stayed in a 6-bed female dorm and all the girls were very considerate, mature, and quiet. I met some great people while I was there, both staff and vacationers. Lots of people who stay at Space are traveling and working, they are not there to get smashed and party, so the overall vibe is one of maturity. I would thoroughly recommend this place to anyone looking to travel on the cheap but with high standards. It was by far the best hostel I had ever stayed at. Thank you Space! And Hotels.com!!! Very helpful staff. I enjoyed the use of the gym on level 3, and there was good water pressure and heat in the showers. The hotel was very clean, so I would recommend this place to anyone travelling on a budget.

Great clean hostel. The facilities were surprisingly good. A large open modern kitchen with scenic views of the city was a treat. Although we didn't use it, there was a spa on the rooftop with wonderful views of the city. The rooms were clean and very presentable and prices were fair. Amenities were clean.

I didn't consider this a hotel. I did, knowingly beforehand, share my room with 2 other strangers. For Australia prices I do recommend staying here and it is a very clean hostel. There are numerous shared bathrooms on each floor. And pray that the person who used it before you was clean. Had to pay for internet use.

I stayed at single room for two days. The price was somewhat expensive as a backpacker hotel. However, hotel was clean and had good security system. Drain of bathroom was not good. Therefore, floor of bathroom looked dirty during peak time.

Great front counter staff, the room was nice, albeit quite small. The facilities were great, it is a good deal and place to stay if you want a newer, cleaner type of hostel. Great CBD location too.

Space would qualify as a hotel if not for the shared barhroom facilities! The hotel was great for only one thing, the windows did not open so there was 24/7 air conditioning! If you have allergies it not so good!

Excellent location! Just a mere 5 minutes walk away from the famous Lygon Street, RMIT University and free City Tram. The receptionist who attended to me was friendly, thorough and fast with the check-in procedures as well as guiding me through the regulations and facilities. I booked a single room throughout my stay and while the room is small, it […] was enough for one person. All the necessities were there - TV, confortable and clean bed, full-length mirror (important for the ladies), a huge cupboard, several power plugs, a desk with chair and even a little bedside lamp! Also, I was on the 6th floor so the huge window with a view of the city was definitely a bonus! The toilets/bathrooms were located just beside my room and there were plentiful so there's certainly no need for queues. The entire place was also mostly quiet all the time and I pretty much slept through the nights without being disturbed at all. The common kitchen was huge and has all the necessary tools. I also used the laundry room which was great too albeit a little pricey to use the washing machines and dryers. Also, there are no free internet so you'll have to pay extra for it. I didn't require it so it did not affect me. The only negative experience I had was with my towel, which had a red stain but other than that, everything was pretty much perfect! Lees meer

I have a pleasant stay overall. Within walking distance to Lygon street (10 mins), Melbourne central (15mins) and Chinatown (10mins). The facilities are of acceptable conditions and staff try to help when possible. Note is no free shuttle bus for stayers although it was mentioned in the website.

Tea, Coffee, Sugar, Cups & Boiling water provided on each floor, but no bar fridge in rooms, or communal fridge on each floor for keeping milk & drinks cold. Great budget hotel for all types of travellers. I went to Melbourne alone to visit friends and stayed in the 4 bunk dorm - had no problems whatsoever. All the rooms have cupboards next to each bed to store your stuff (bring a padlock if you want to lock it), and an individual nightlight and powerpoints to charge your phone. The hotel is about 8 levels […] with a bar down on ground level, a movie theatre (never saw anything on though?), a common lounge, kitchen and rooftop deck/spa. Most noticeable thing was the diversity in the residents - families, elderly, solo travellers, students etc. Would definitely go back in the future, if you don't mind sharing a room (when you're just sleeping anyway), and saving ~75% of the cost of a hotel - just remember to bring earplugs in case you're with a snorer! The hotel is located just outside Melbourne's CBD. It is far from the bus station and main sights. The bed is clean, but some of the bathrooms are not. There are also problems with noisy guests. There is a movie room. But it is more like a hotel than a hostel. Not much lounge space or opportunities to meet people. Internet is expensive.

it was a great location - more designed for backpackers. unfortunate our room was right outside the communal bathrooms but it was clean and tiday and fine for the one night we were there. Thought it was a bit expensive for a hostel style private room though

This was good value for a private twin room. Definitely a good sized, clean, modern room. The Internet and wi-fi facilities are complicated, frustrating and expensive. I thought I booked a room with an en-suite, but it wasn't. The shared bathroom and shower facilities were ok, but could have been a lot cleaner. I thought the floor in the shower was a bit slippery and again could have been a lot cleaner (eg: hair in the drain) would have felt better showering in sandals but didn't pack any. We only stayed one night, but were able to leave our luggage in a locked room for the day and they booked the skybus for us as well. The location was terrific, walked everywhere.
