Prima hotel met goede prijs-prestatieverhouding. Vriendelijk personeel, goed restaurant met acceptabele prijzen. Fantastisch (voor hotelgasten gratis!) leisure-center met zwembad, stoomcabine, sauna, gym. Een aanrader voor als je in Oxford of omgeving moet zijn. Gezien de ligging (nabij de M40) is een auto wel noodzakelijk.

Het hotel is oke op de stofnesten onder het bed na. De etensmogelijkheden (naast het hotel) zijn minder, eigenlijk alleen maar fastfood. Als je daar niet van houdt, is dat niet prettig. Het dichtstnabijgelegen restaurant is ver weg en in het donker niet te vinden, daar je allemaal kleine binnenweggetjes afmoet naar Hungerford. De omgeving is echter prachtig. TomTom kent Membury niet. Het ligt aan de A4 en niet in Hungerford.

De inrichting van het hotel is zeer out-dated, ook het hotel zelf is zeker oudbollig te noemen. Wij vonden dat echter ook wel weer charme hebben: de wirwar van gangetjes en trappetjes, de kinderen konden echt op ontdekkingstocht. Het zwembad was voor hen ook prima. Hier was ook nog een verlaten sqaush baan - likje verf zou niet misstaan, maar het was er wel en mocht gebruikt. Zelf zou ik hier niet drie week verblijven, maar even een nachtje was helemaal goed.

Bij het inchecken dien je in het geval van incidentele kosten een erkend identiteitsbewijs en een borgsom in contanten of creditcard voor te leggen.

"pleasant surprise"
I read some of the other reviews about this hotel and got a little nervous about what I was walking into. However, I found the hotel to be clean, staff to be friendly and location great. It is a 17th century building so the floors are a bit uneven; however, I think that's part of the experience of staying in a centuries old building. The rooms are modern […] with all the normal amenities- en suite bathroom, satellite TV, coffee maker. The location is great; it's within a short walking distance to the center of town. Convenient for the centre of Oxford, with several restaurants and a supermarket nearby. Buses and National Express coaches stops nearby. As building is 400 years old staircase uneven and ceilings low. Bar and public areas small. Seems reception does not have 24 hours cover.

When we arrived at hotel (in afternoon),everything was closed up and we could not gain access:it took about 20 minutes until I could find somebody at the back of the building who let us in.I cannot understand the 4 star rating for this hotel;service was non-existent
"Urine Mattress"
When we first entered the hotel, we were concerned that it was really a pub, with the hotel upstairs - which actually ended up not being a big problem. The biggest problem is that when we entered our room, there was a peculiar smell. I couldn't place it for awhile, but when i got into bed (and lifted up the sheet), the smell was much more defined. I […] smelled the mattress and knew exactly what I was smelling. I told the guy at the front door (slash bar tender) and they had a replacement mattress less than a half hour later. The questions I need to ask about the urine mattress are as follows: (1) Did they not smell this themselves? (2) Assuming they smelled what I did, how did they think it was acceptable to put sheets on the mattress and have a customer sleep on it? (3) How did they have a replacement mattress so quickly? (4) Did they swap our new mattress with another room's, just putting the problem in another poor future customer's court? (5) How is this place in business? This hotel is a prime example of why I don't always love using Hotels.com because I have prepaid for the room and feel like I'd be wasting money if I went to another hotel for the evening. That being said, I should have definitely viewed my money spent at the Old Black Horse Inn as a sunk cost and got the heck out of there, instead of spending two horrible (mostly sleepless) nights there. Having looked at some of the reviews on the web site before we left must admit I was very apprehensive - however the room was extremely comfortable and very clean - we were expecting it to be old and sloping in view of it's age etc. Breakfast on Saturday was fine, good food served quickly and very hot. Sunday was a bit different the hotel was fuul, […] and there isonly an hour for breakfast so everyone was there at the same time, and only one member of staff working - this is just not good enough and really took the shine of the weekend, to wait over an hour!!! "Convenient"
My friend and I spent 2 days in Oxford and stayed at the Old Black Horse Inn. We didn't know that a double room meant just a standard double bed and that the twin suite has two beds in a room, so be sure you know that before you book! The hotel is quite small, so if you're a tall person it will be a tight fit, especially the showers! Other than that […] it was quite clean and the breakfast was quite nice. The location is very convenient in that it is within walking distance to most of the main attraction/activities in Oxford. Plus it was great when we came back after a long day of walking to just go downstairs to the pub for a nice pint of beer! Lees meer

Noisy, rooms overlook pub patio, loud; smoke wafting into room. Water stopped in the middle of both my showers...had to rinse with water from sink poured over from coffee pot. Calls cannot be received from outside; no messages can be taken. No desk..".hostess, cleaning lady, cook" always "VERY BUSY." "Old Black Horse Hotel 102 St Clements St, Oxford,"
The hotel is somewhat quaint and querky. The room was clean and tidy (I got Room 4). The big problem was when I went to bed none of the lights worked. I tried everything and ended up having to leave the ensuite door open to see anything. Another big complaint was that I returned to the hotel at around midnight and found that I could not get into the […] hotel. All the doors were locked with a numerical push button lock ie one had to enter a four digit code to open the door. Nowhere in the literature or when I arrived was I told that you would need a four digit code to open the doors after the hotel was locked up. So there I was shouting (at the front door of the hotel at midnight) for someone to let me in. I finally called the hotel by telephone and fortunately someone answered and gave me the four digit code and finally I got in. This hotel certainly does not deserve a four stars rating. Lees meer
"Needs updating"
I am not sure how this place received a 4 star rating by the British Tourist Board, as It is run down and with threadbare carpets. Several light bulbs didn't work and due to the low ceilings, I had to kneel down to shower (I am just over 6' tall) and also had very weak water pressure. The WIFI only worked on my computer in certain parts of the room […] (not at the desk), so I had to keep going downstairs to check email. Not suitable for business. The location is OK and some capital investment it could be a nice B&B type Inn. *Note to hotels.com. Please don't show this is a 4 star. That is misleading. This should probably be a 1 star. Service was poor and staff were not particularly friendly or helpful (verging on rude). My room had a 3 lights that did not work but worst of all was that my shower did not work properly and there was no one around to help or fix it. The location is good for seeing local attractions but that is about the only plus point. I would never stay here again. "The Old Black Horse Inn - not a good value"
This Inn is OK if you are under 5'5'. I am 5'10'' and could not stand up in the room in most places. Also, the heat really did not work. The room was down to 64 degress by 9 PM - and I was on the top floor. The people on the lower floors must have been really cold. There is no elevator, and nobody would help with my bag. Si vous n'avez pas besoin de propreté, de calme et de température ambiante normale, cet hôtel est pour vous! La seule bonne chose que possède cet hôtel est sa situation: il est très près de l'université d'Oxford.

One guy came in to my room to fix the lights (the same room that apparently had no lights in July according to one of the comments). I made it pretty clear that I did not want this man in my room. "Charming and nice-for-price"
The picture of old English inns this small pub/guestrooms are perfectly placed within 2mins from highstreet, and with lovely Cowley just next door. We got served by two (seemingly) teenagers, who also operated the pub. Nice but a bit clueless. If you don't expect top modern, spacious etc, this will serve your need perfectly.
"Ok for backpackers, but not for businessmen"
Very old. the entrance is same as for the pub. Pub bar is also reception. Very small rooms. No elevator, narrow staircases, no big mirror, no clear light in bathroom, tv smaller than a laptop, busy street next to hotel and windows are not insulated at all. breakfast horrible. And I had no warm water in shower. However bathroom and bed were clean.
