    Castle of Agia Mavra

A top spot to learn about the history of the island

One of the most fascinating historic spots on Lefkada is the Castle of Agia Mavra. It's located close to the island's entrance from the mainland and dates all the way back to the early 14th century, being built to offer fortification and protection for Lefkada from potential invasions.

The castle has undergone many trials over the years, burning down in the late 19th century and being bombed during World War II. Fortunately, many original features are still standing to this day, including the stunning Agia Mavra Church and many old medieval walls. Admission is free.

Locatie: Castle of Agia Mavra, Palairos 300 02, Lefkada, Greece

Open: Monday–Saturday from 8 am to 3 pm (closed on Sundays)

    Porto Katsiki

The most popular beach on Lefkada

There are countless beautiful beaches dotted all around the coastline of Lefkada, and Porto Katsiki is one of the very best. A picture-perfect, postcard-style beach that backs onto gorgeous cliffs and boasts the softest sands on the island, Porto Katsiki is simply breathtaking.

Accessible by either boat or car, this beach is well-suited to families, couples, and groups of friends. The road to the beach winds along a scenic mountain road, so even getting to Porto Katsiki feels like an adventure in and of itself. Don't forget to bring some comfortable footwear as some parts of the beach are a little rocky.

    Panagia Faneromeni

A monastery of special spiritual significance

Panagia Faneromeni is the home of a centuries-old monastery and a site of special religious significance for Lefkada locals and visitors. It’s said that Paul the Apostle sent some of his students to this spot, where they spread the word of Jesus. Panagia Faneromeni holds a special place in the heart of Christians but can be enjoyed by visitors of all beliefs.

The monastery sits atop a hill, just a short distance outside of Lefkada Town. It has a history dating back to the 17th century and houses a fascinating museum, filled with religious and spiritual artefacts. The area's hilltop location also enjoys amazing views over surrounding parts of the northern coast.

    Dimossari Waterfalls

    Perfect for summer days

As well as beautiful beaches and intriguing historic sites, Lefkada can also boast of wonderful waterfalls in the form of the Dimossari Waterfalls. They're not far from the charming little village of Nidri and are even sometimes known as the Nidri Waterfalls, too.

On hot days, you'll find plenty of locals and tourists taking a dip in the refreshing waters here. Surrounded by lush vegetation and awe-inspiring rock formations, the Dimossari Waterfalls are a spectacular sight for all to see. Getting there is half the fun, as you have to follow a little winding gorge trail for about half an hour from Nidri.

    Lefkada Town

    The heart of the island

No visit to Lefkada can be complete without taking a stroll around the island's capital, Lefkada Town. It's home to some terrific restaurants, bars, and cafés. Lefkada Town's buildings are famously colourful, beautifully decorated and amazingly maintained, especially considering the town has suffered greatly from earthquakes over the years.

Many of Lefkada Town's winding, cobblestone streets lead down to the little harbour, where visitors can look out and admire the boats and shimmering waters, just off the coast. This is also where you'll find some of Lefkada's top seafood restaurants.

    Milos Beach

    The quietest beach on Lefkada

Some of Lefkada's best beaches tend to be very busy throughout the year, but Milos Beach is different. It's over on the northwest coast and is actually a little tricky to reach, as you need to hike along a little rocky trail to get there. This means that, unlike some of the more popular coastal spots, Milos Beach is often almost empty.

You can really feel like you have the whole place to yourself here, even in the peak summer months, and the beach itself is simply magnificent. A wide, open expanse of sand stretches out in both directions, backing onto cliffs and greenery, without any hotels, bars, or other man-made structures interrupting the view.

    Vasiliki

The top spot for world-class windsurfing

If you're looking to enjoy some watersports in Lefkada, Vasiliki is the place to be. Located down in the southern part of the island, this ever-evolving resort haven is developing a reputation as one of the top windsurfing spots in all of Greece. Oddly enough, the bay here is bordered by a tall valley with steep slopes, so it might not seem like a good spot for strong winds.

In reality, however, the wind really picks up in the afternoons, drawing in windsurfers from far and wide. In the mornings, it's a little calmer and quieter here, so that's the time to visit if you're coming with kids and just want to admire the views. There are some nice hiking trails nearby and some good restaurants down by the marina as well.

    Cape Lefkatas

    The most beautiful views

One of the most awe-inspiring sights in all of Lefkada can be found at Cape Lefkatas. The island was named after this impressive cape, which stretches out into the sea, just south of Porto Katsiki. Towering white cliffs dominate the view here, and it's no surprise that natives have been drawn to this beautiful spot for thousands of years.

There are plenty of myths and legends associated with Cape Lefkatas, including the story that the famous poet, Sappho, leapt to her doom off the side of the cape after being spurned by her lover. Myths aside, it's a stunning spot, blessed with wonderful views in every direction and home to the Doukato Lighthouse, which has been standing since the late 19th century.

    Church of Agios Ioannis Antzoussis

The oldest church on the island

The Church of Agios Ioannis Antzoussis is the most intriguing of all the churches on Lefkada. It was actually built into the rock on the northern side of the island, looking out over the equally unmissable beach of Agios Ioannis. This church is the oldest in all of Lefkada, with a history dating back to the 1500s.

Once again, this site has immense spiritual significance, as it's believed that the Apostle Paul once preached there, some 2,000 years ago. It's open to visitors throughout the year and houses some special artwork and artefacts.
