The hotel Scala Turm is situated at the very top of the enormous tower in the centre of Jena. We arrived after 9pm when the reception was closed but it was ok because we'd 'warned' them in advance of our arrival time and the night security guard at the bottom of the tower already had our room keys ready for us when we got there. All the hotel rooms are on the 27th floor and the view is spectacular - although perhaps not so good if you're scared of heights, as it really is VERY high indeed - the 2nd tallest hotel in Germany, apparently. The room was ultra modern and spotlessly clean. The bathroom is a minimalist clear glass rectangle and the bed was very comfy, although I would have preferred a choice of pillows - as the standard German ones always feel like they have no filling in and feel very 'insubstantial' to someone used to British pillows. There is a safe large enough for a laptop. The room controls are very high tech and it took me a while to work out which button did what (how to open the blinds, how to open the window, light settings etc). We didn't have breakfast there, as it was expensive and other reviews suggested it wasn't worth the money. There is an underground car park directly under the hotel but because we'd arrived when the reception was closed we had to walk up out of the car park and round the corner to find the hotel entrance. We had a very comfortable stay there and the hotel location could not have been more perfect or central
