I stayed in Malta from the 24th to the 30th of september 2011, in the Porto Azzurro Aparthotel.
My expectations being based on the price and reviews, I was pleasantly surprised.
The rooms are in good condition and very clean (turns out, if you book via Expedia your room is even cleaned daily). The people of the hotel are very helpful - the first day I complained about the view of my room (countryside and on the ground), they immediately searched and found another room (view satisfactory). The pool is pleasant and clean, the sporting equipment is in good condition. I did not dine in the hotel, the breakfast was basic but good.
The only downside I could find was the location - XemXija is a long drive from Valetta and St. Julians. Despite this, the hotel is actually close to St. Paul's bay, the boat to Gozo and Mellieha. Behind the pool of the hotel (uphill) is a "heritage route" - a hiking path between the ruins of the thousand years old civilisation. It's very impressive and you get a nice view of Xemxija and St. Paul's Bay along the way.
I travelled alone - I just used the hotel to sleep and have breakfast, and it did its job more than satisfactory.
