Hard to Find the Charm in Old English Hotels
Despite an excellent location just next to the entrance to the cathedral, this hotel is another of those run-down, bleak firetraps from way back in the last century. You know it's old as soon as you climb the narrow stairs to the tiny reception area and notice the grimy carpet and chipped woodwork. Getting to your room involves climbing meandering stairs that go one way, up another short flight of stairs, and then still in another direction. (There is no lift.) My room had a nice bed but little else: a tiny desk cluttered with a tinier TV, a phone and tea tray that took up most of the surface space, a small mismatched old table and chair, and other than a bedside lamp, just an overhead light - at night the room was gloomy. I shared a bathroom with an adjoining room, and no complaints there, nor with the breakfast offerings. While some might find all of this charming, my advice to myself from now on, and to others, is simply this: spend a bit more on a modern hotel.
