Bloemenmarkt in Amsterdam is the world’s only floating flower market. Founded in 1862, this unique market sits on the Singel Canal Koningsplein and the Muntplein and is made up of a series of houseboat greenhouses.

Though many of the stalls are more known for selling wooden tulips, bulbs and more kitschy souvenirs than actual blooms, it is still one of the most colourful and fragrant places in the city. It is definitely a delight for the senses, and the experience is quintessentially Dutch. Bulbs are available for purchase, and many are approved for import into other countries, so it is possible to take them home.

Highlights of Bloemenmarkt

The location of Bloemenmarkt stems back to when people would sail on barges from their farms and properties along the Amstel River to come to Amsterdam to sell their wares. Though nowadays items are trucked in rather than delivered by boat, many of the same flowers, seeds and bulbs are still available.

The market is technically no longer floating, as it is now perched on piles to keep it in place. The majority of the stalls have changed their focus to appeal more toward tourists by selling souvenirs of Amsterdam as well as the more renowned fresh flowers.

Good Things to Know About Visiting

Open year-round, Bloemenmarkt has something special to offer in every season. In spring and summer, the famous tulips are a sight to behold. The market is full of other fragrant flowers in summer, as well, such as geraniums and narcissus. In late fall, the market readies itself for the winter holidays by offering Christmas trees and other festive decorations.
