Stayed in the penthouse suite. Last-minute booking, quite affordable and unique for this neighborhood -- but there are caveats.
The penthouse is a large, open apartment-like space with sitting areas, a kitchen/dining area, two beds (king and double), and a bathroom with a tub. Very cool and unique space, much larger than you would get at newer corporate hotels for this price. I could have lived here for a week. It was quiet with no creaking or disturbance from other guests. The ambience especially in the evening is chill and dare I say romantic.
There are a lot of stairs to get up there, so it may be challenging for the elderly or those with a ton of bags. The furniture and fixtures are functional but dated (this is what you sign up for when you stay at Tabard Inn imo). The bed was comfortable and I slept soundly. The shower was a bit awkward -- small space, water gets on the floor, and the hot water only lasted for about 5 minutes. I was shivering by the end.
It was my first time staying at Tabard Inn, and I think it helps to look at it as an experience. Try to remind yourself that it is an "inn", not a "hotel" like a Marriott or Hyatt. If you have stayed at similar places (in Europe perhaps?) or bed & breakfasts without all the modern amenities, then you are more likely to appreciate your stay at Tabard Inn. I think the restaurant and bar is still the star, but I'm glad to have stayed here at least once in my life. It really is a unique and historical place.
