    Gyeongju National Park has a number of cultural preserves that date back to the Silla Dynasty. Located near Gyeongju city, it’s known as Korea’s only historical national park. 

    The park covers a total area of 137 sq km, and houses important historical sites from the Silla period. There are hiking trails leading to Mount Namsan – depending on the trail, you might pass by Mangwolsa Temple and Samneung Royal Tomb before reaching the summit.

    Namsan Mountain attracts outdoor enthusiast with scenic hiking trails that lead to historical sites in Gyeongju. The mountain is almost 500 metres tall, and was regarded as a sacred place during the Silla period. Hundreds of Buddha sculptures, temples and pagodas dot the mountainside, so plan ahead to make the most out of your visit. 

    For safety reasons, it is advisable to start your hike in the morning and bring plenty of water and snacks. Depending on how many stops you make, it may take about 5 hours of sightseeing on Namsan Mountain.

    Samneung Forest

    Situated at the foot of Mt. Nam of Gyeongju, Samneung Forest is a beautiful pine forest surrounding the tombs of Kings Adalla, Sindeok and Gyeongmyeong of Shilla. The forest is widely known thanks to works by photographer Bae Bien-u, and if you happen to be there at dawn, you'll be treated with views of the landscape that resemble an ink-and-wash painting. It is said to be especially photogenic on a foggy day. Maybe you too can capture Samneung Forest in an unforgettable photo. No matter what, it's a great place for slow walks and rejuvenating your mind and body.

    Jusangjeolli Padosori-gil

    Jusangjeolli Padosori-gil is a 1.7-km promenade along the East Sea that connects Haseo Port and Eupcheon Port. Along the route, you'll be treated to beautiful coastal scenery of columnar joints formed by volcanic activity. Columnar joints generally extend upward, but the columnar joints here spread widely toward the sea. The promenade is well built and maintained, making it a great spot for a walk with your partner or the whole family. If a bit of physical and mental rejuvenation sounds good to you, take a leisurely walk listening to the sound of waves and taking in the turquoise waters, blue skies and black rock formations.

    Cycling is a fun activity that nearly everyone can enjoy at Gyeongju. Bicycles are very easily available within the city centre. It’s an affordable way of touring the city, but make sure you’re dressed comfortably and carrying plenty of water. 

    There are a number of bike tours taking you to various spots – most start from downtown Gyeongju to must-visit places such as the Seokbinggo ice storage area, Gyeongju National Museum, Cheongseongdae Observatory, and Bunhwangsa Temple.
