In association with the Smithsonian Institute, the Las Vegas Natural History Museum is home to exhibits on the natural world and the sciences, both for young and older visitors. Founded in 1989 by a small group of local citizens, the museum was created to house a pre-existing collection of wildlife and prehistoric exhibits. Museum founders believed that this was a vital step in aiding the community in an appreciation for local natural history and sciences, both past and present.

The museum is located in a area known as the Cultural Corridor, particularly for its array of museums, and you can plan to spend about an hour or so strolling through the exhibits on wildlife, prehistoric creatures, Egyptian artefacts, the beauty of the savanna, dinosaurs, geology, and more. There are a variety of other museums nearby, so it would be easy to stop by a few all in one day.

Las Vegas Natural History Museum highlights

The museum features a variety of interactive and engaging exhibits. One of their most popular exhibits, Treasures of Egypt, explores how archaeologists in the early 20th century discovered breathtaking Egyptian artefacts, such as Tutankhamun’s tomb. Visitors can walk through a replica of the entrance to the pharaoh's tomb and see other realistic replicas of artefacts, such as the Golden Throne, chariots, the Golden Shrine, and the outer sarcophagus. Visitors can also “scan” a mummy with cutting-edge technology that allows guests to see medical imaging from a real mummy, just like an Egyptologist.

If you or your kiddos are into dinosaurs, don't miss the Engelstad Family Prehistoric Life Gallery, which features a massive Tyrannosaurus rex that can move its head and let out a fearsome roar. The museum has other replicas of dinosaurs, such as a triceratops, an ankylosaur, a raptor, an ichthyosaur, and a giant marine reptile. Make sure to check out the Dinosaur Mummy Cretaceous Science Investigation exhibit to discover the crime-scene techniques that modern palaeontologists use to study dinosaurs.
